Mrs. Weinberg’s Third Grade Update
They will never care about how much you know until they know how much you care
Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to our ongoing web page. We have completed our first unit of Language Arts and will have tests this week to assess comprehension. We need to evaluate if the students are able to take the information they have learned and apply it in other situations. The pace in second grade was very different from what they are doing in third grade, and I have to compliment all of them and the parents and families. The students are all learning so quickly, are finding a way to complete the homework, and still be alert and ready for another day. Give them a hug and a "high 5" for their efforts.
Spellathon is next week so please help sponsor your child and get them ready for the test. They received the words in the PTA packet and next week those words will be the words for the week. The monies raised by the children in the name of PTA funds some wonderful programs, technology, and supplies we use back in the classrooms. Thank you and have a terrific week.
As always, if you need to email me you can reach me at jweinberg@ycsd.york.va.us or just call before or after school at 867-4896.

This week we are reading about Fly Traps and have spelling and vocabulary words that apply to the reading. The vocabulary for this story is: collect, hinge, insects, pitcher, plants, and trap. The “Family Times” newsletter goes home Monday with the words and suggestions for activities that families can do together.
SOCIAL STUDIES We begin another Social Studies unit this week as we look at four famous Explorers: Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport. Students will continue to work on their country reports during the month and map the routes of the explorers on maps they have made.
MATH – We will continue daily timed tests for practice. Have them look at why they missed questions on the returned work so they can learn from their errors. We are finishing with addition 2 and 3 digit numbers and will have a quiz on Thursday. Then we tackle subtraction with the larger numbers until the end of the month. Try to find opportunities around home or at the store to help your child apply these concepts to their everyday lives.
