Announcements
All class announcements will be listed here, with date and time stamp. Be aware, and check every day!
5/17/2014: The Study Guide for the semester exam is posted.
3/17/2014: Today, there was a "Notes Quiz" on the First Commandment. Those who missed class today: Your notes quiz will be in the Testing Center from 7:45 am on Tuesday, 3/18. Unless you contact me (via e-mail) before your class period meets (7th or 8th), this quiz must be completed by 3:15pm on Tuesday, 3/18.
2/26/2014: Yesterday, February 25, brought Sister Theresita Donach, CSFN to visit our freshman religion classes and speak of her experience with a charity reaching out to our brothers and sisters in Haiti who lack basic medical care. Visit Forward in Health for more information. Though the students did not have much time to discuss the information presented, they responded first to the presentation in written reflections. Some quotes are shared here, as we continue to study Catholic Social Teaching.
-
"What I learned yesterday really challenges me that much more because I now realize how bad people actually have it. When you learn how horrible these peoples lives are you can't even imagine being in their position and you feel bad for them. You really want to help make [their] lives just a little bit more."
-
"This video really opened my eyes and made me realize how hard it is for these people. They live close to the [United] States yet they are so far off. We can't just forget about them. They are our neighbors. Our duty as Catholics is to treat our neighbors as ourselves. We need to live that out, not just say it."
-
"What I heard about all the poverty and hunger challenges me to help out in the world and make a difference. This challenges me to donate my time, energy and money. From what I heard I am called to do some form of help."
-
"This speaker has called us all to appreciate everything we have, but also to give to the need and less fortunate. If all of society did this the world would be better off and stronger."
-
"Hearing these things challenges me to want to be more grateful for what I have and try to join programs like Feed My Starving Children. Also, this challenges me to be more aware of what's going on in the world."
-
"It makes me wanna do what those people in the video did, go and give medical care to those poor, suffering kids. I want to see the joy and relief of being happy and healthy."
-
"I would like to be able to change lives and make people happy just like Sister did. Making others happy makes me happy."
-
"Every little thing we do in the world can have a big cause in someones life even if it doesn't in ours."
Announcements
1/21/2014: As 8th period left the classroom today at 2pm, I was informed that the Freshman Mass scheduled for tomorrow, which I said might be iffy, has been cancelled. We will have class during all periods tomorrow, Wednesday, 1/22. Be sure your assignments are ready to go. Mass may be rescheduled for the near future. You will be informed of updates.
1/6/2014: Please note that the closing of school on Monday 1/6 and Tuesday 1/7 does NOT change the deadlines published for exam review packets being completed. Be aware of your deadlines and be sure to meet them.
1/3/2014: Did you make New Year's resolutions? A writer composed a list of resolutions for Catholics based on the teachings of Pope Francis in the past months. Do any of these resonate with you? New Year's resolutions: The Pope Francis list.
12/24/2013: As announced in class on Thursday, 12/19, the Semester 1 Exam Review: 2013-2014 is now available for your studies and reflection. Note that there is a due date on your work, though the format is somewhat flexible. However, you must have a hard copy - not electronic - by the date due, Thursday, January 9. This will be checked in class, and worth 20 points.
Merry Christmas, and blessings to you and your family as you celebrate the true meaning of this day!
11/19/2013: As promised in class today, here is the bonus opportunity for this quarter (Bonus Opportunity: Thanksgiving). Please take note of each part of the assignment; all must be completed in order to earn the bonus points.
10/31/2013: Tomorrow is All Saints Day - a Holy Day of Obligation. Join the Saint Viator High School faith community in prayer at one of two Masses offered on Friday - before school at 7:30 am and after school at 3:05 pm - in Alumni Memorial Chapel on the 2nd floor. See you there!
10/29/2013: I have re-scheduled your Unit Test to next Wednesday, November 6. It is changed to this far off because of scheduling with school calendars.
8/24/2013 (2:10 pm): In checking in your Gospel reflections from class yesterday, I discovered that, even though the correct number of responses (44) was submitted by the end of 8th period, some of those were doubles from some of you. That means that not all of your reflections were turned in. Please go to your grades and check - if you have a blank in the grade for Gospel Reflection (8/23), send me your confirmation e-mail that you submitted the questions (with your copy of your responses), and I will credit your points.
8/24/2013: Happy Saturday morning! I just looked quickly at your responses to the "Intro Questionaire" that was assigned on Thursday for homework. Your responses, particularly your questions about the Catholic Faith, show that you have thought deeply about these issues already, and have some definitely adult inquiries about the faith. We are still missing 5 responses, though, so get those in before we are back to school on Monday! If you did not complete the Student Information Sheet, you must do so before Monday as well. Thank you for helping this course to come together. God bless you on your weekend.
Weekly Timeline 2013- 2014
Note: School policy states that any e-mail messages that a student sends to a teacher MUST be copied to at least one parent of the student, clearly shown in the "To" field on the e-mail. Any e-mail that is received without this valid parent address showing will be deleted without being read, and it will be as if the message had not been sent.
