The Day of the Dead
El Día de los Muertos
A Mexican holiday tradition...
"Day of the Dead" is NOT Halloween! It isn't meant to be scary or morbid at all. It is meant to be fun and light-hearted, yet a time of respectful remembering of family members that have passed away. It is a very religious Mexican holiday that goes along in some ways with the Catholic holiday of "All Saints/Souls Day". It combines ancient Aztec beliefs with some more current Catholic religious traditions and is a very important Mexican holiday. Again, it is NOT AT ALL Halloween and is more like a version of our Memorial Day gone wild ;-)
El Día de los Muertos is celebrated in this way in Mexico and also by many
Mexican-Americans living in the United States. In other Hispanic countries, it may not be celebrated at all, or if it is (such as in Panama), it is celebrated simply the same way that we Americans celebrate our "Memorial Day" each year, by going to the cemeteries and planting flowers on the graves of our departed family members, cleaning off the grave stones, and maybe attending a Memorial Day parade and picnic with our families. However, in MEXICO, where this holiday is REALLY popular and the tradition originated from, it is celebrated in the way that you are going to read and learn about today...which is a little different to us...but hey, that's why you're studying a FOREIGN language and culture, to learn about some differences.
