Welcome to Mrs. Mullins Language Arts & Science Page WMS Black Team Language Arts Class Sixth Grade Language Arts Syllabus Gail Mullins/Rm 104 Teacher Planning time 2:30-3:00 P.M. School Phone 276-642-5400 gailm@wcs.k12.va.us The student will plan, draft, revise, and edit writing with emphasis in narratives, expository, persuasion while learning and applying writing skills. The student will also continue to develop an appreciation for literature through a study of literary elements contained in classic works as well as contemporary selections. The student will meet or exceed state SOL scores. The student will be encouraged to become a self sufficient individual. Each student will need a 1 1/2 inch notebook with loose paper, 10 pocket folders, and one pack of 3x5 index cards. Instruction consists of lecture, demonstration, group activities, and projects that engage students and provide opportunities for effective learning. Class Rules: Be prepared for class each day. Follow all classroom rules and procedures. No sleeping on the job! Student’s grades will be an averaged from the following areas: English, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and projects. Grading Scale: 93-100 A 85-92 B 77-84 C 70-76 D 0-69 F Mondays will include a new list of vocabulary for students to study throughout the week. A particular selection of genre will be read orally and discussed from our textbook, Holt, Rinehart and Winston Virginia Edition. A comprehension test will follow over the selection on Tuesday. We will be writing narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive styles of writing. Friday will include a spelling/vocabulary test over terms introduced on Monday. Our week will end with the sharing of a novel and activity. Grammar and writing skills will be taught using the Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Workbook, Virginia Edition. We will be writing narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive styles of writing. We will write 2 writings per/9 weeks beginning with narratives. Projects Listed below are several projects we will complete during the school year. 1.) Write an extensive book report that follows the Mullins' format. 2.) Write and publish a class book entitled, "Tales to Remember". 3.) "Freak the Mighty" projects 4.) All students will be encouraged to earn a varsity letter in reading. School Phone: 276-642-5400 gailm@wcs.k12.va.us The students will understand the nature of science that defines the idea that explanations of nature are developed and tested using observation, experimentation, models, evidence, and systematic processes. This includes explanations about nature, predicting consequences of our actions, and how our actions affect our world. The student will use scientific investigation, reasoning, and logic to study the world in which we live. The student will need 1 ½ inch notebook with loose paper, colored pencils, and pencil sharpener. Instruction will consist of lecture, demonstration, group activities, notes, and lab projects.
