December 1, 2009 Our homeroom class is doing a service-learning project this week. We are collecting donations that will be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Johnson City before the Christmas holidays. Friday, Dec. 4, Lysol spray, Mr. Clean, dryer sheets, trial size deodorant, shaving cream, toothbrush, trial size toothpaste, hairbrush ENGLISH/WRITING: What's a double negative? That's what our class will work on next week. Students should be able to identify negative words and explain why double negatives are not considered to be standard English. READING: Our classes are reading Because of Winn-Dixie, the story of a young girl who's struggling to understand the absence of her mother. This Newbery Honor Book is filled with outstanding characters and events that lead the reader to a satisfying conclusion. When we're not reading, we'll be studying prefixes and suffixes. On Thursday and Friday of this week, we'll be watching the movie of Because of Winn-Dixie and comparing it to the book. VOCABULARY #3: constellation- NOUN- a group of stars that forms a pattern or picture in the night sky hymn - NOUN - a song, usually sung in church myth - NOUN - a person or thing that is not real or true teeter - VERB - to move unsteadily; to wobble sorrow - NOUN- great sadness potion - NOUN - a mixture of liquids SPELLING PARAGRAPH #3: After working at Gertrude's Pets, Winn-Dixie and I would go over to the Herman W. Block Memorial Library and listen to Miss Franny Block tell us stories. But my favorite place to be that summer was in Gloria Dump's yard. I figured it was Winn-Dixie's favorite place to be, too. HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES: Students will: Practice writing the spelling paragraph in cursive. Practice the weekly vocabulary words with a study partner at home. Read for a minimum of 30 minutes each evening.
