My Dot.com Overview The intention of this unit is that students will gain sufficient knowledge and experience to develop: 1. a power-point presentation in ‘current affairs style segment’ for a community web-site that portrays how young people experience the Internet and establish an identity (web based communities) in the dot com world. Students will need to analyse their current activities using an information literacy process to find out what peers do and understand and then a project management process to communicate their understandings with a broad audience. Teachers might develop this unit to provide students with a broad scope of knowledge and understanding first and then ask students to define their project or use the project as a structure to develop knowledge and understanding as the unit progresses. 2. develop and participate in a web-community which includes web authoring experience and basic web script writing. Teachers will need to provide knowledge and understanding about web-page construction including issues such demographics, audience, purpose, basic graphics and web page scripts. Prime web authoring tools will be MS Frontpage 2000 will limited HTML exposure to aid in basic scripting. Outcomes: Compulsory outcomes selected for My Dot.com Unit are: ACIE 5.3 Students build information systems to access and construct information. DU 5.1 Students identify communication needs and appropriate graphic design principles to create solutions to challenges. IMU 5.1 Students write algorithms to replicate simple and familiar sequences and identify the steps in the Software Development Cycle. IME 5.2 Students develop a software application following the Software Development Cycle and making use of a programming language VU 5.1 Students identify and evaluate how individuals and small groups develop a sense of personal community and an online presence that they share with others, as they develop solutions to communication and information challenges. VE 5.2 Students participate in and describe online events using a range of synchronous and asynchronous communications tools and online services to solve information and communication challenges.
