Abraham and Isaac had lived in Beersheba, and later, the tribes of Judah and Shimon. In the time of the Kings, copper was mined in the Negev. Ben Gurion warned: “If this nation does not conquer the desert, the desert may conquer us.” One scorching summer day Ben Gurion went down to the Negev with a group of soldiers. They reached Avdat, south of Beersheba, and the sight of the ruins of this ancient historical city excited Ben Gurion’s imagination. He passed through the kibbutz of Sde Boker, which in the 1950’s was a sandy wasteland with only a few tents and a shack. Fourteen young people had come there to settle the Negev and raise sheep. Ben Gurion was so taken by their spirit, he decided to settle in Sde Boker himself, tending sheep, studying and writing. The hut that was built for him at the time still stands today. Ben Gurion was sixty seven and Paula (his wife) over sixty when they left the city and came to live in the Negev. They were both buried there. He saw trees and forests as one of the most important tasks in the development of the land. He insisted that 500 million trees be planted in Israel, and also in the Negev. When he first announced this goal there were those who laughed at his words, but he did not let up. Today there are more than 170 million trees. Sde Boker today includes a college especially for learning about the desert; a guest house; a high school and even a winery. Many people come and visit the hut where the Israeli leader spent the last years of his life.
