WELCOME TO DRAFTING I, III, & III!!

DRAFTING What is Drafting? Everything that we deal with in a day's time, from the clothes that we wear to the homes that we live in, have had a drawing done of them before they were made. These drawings are done by a process called Drafting - a Universal language of industry that uses a series of lines, numbers, and symbols to convey the idea of the designer. In the Drafting Course at the Washington County Career and Technical Centers, students learn Drafting basics in Mechanical and Architectural Drafting, are eligible for Dual Credit hours with Virginia Highlands Community College, and get a head start into careers in Architecture or the many diverse fields of Engineering.

COURSE CONTENT:

Drafting I (8530) - Fundamentals

This course introduces Drafting and focuses on fundamental technical drawing concepts and techniques, especially the visualization of two and three dimensional objects. Topics include use of instruments, lettering, basic geometric construction, scale-reading, orthographic projection, dimensioning, sectioning, auxiliary views, and pictorial views. Introductions to the different chapters are taught using manual ("on the board") drafting methods, after which Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) is introduced. We use the latest versions of AutoCAD, as CAD is a must for any technical, drafting, or engineering field.

Drafting II (8531) - Architecture and Advanced Mechanical Drafting
This course focuses mainly on Architectural Drafting with emphasis on Residential Design. Students learn to interpret and create site plans, floor plans, foundation plans, electrical plans, wall sections, elevations, and details. Drawings are made by both manual and CAD methods. We are currently using Revit Architecture made by Autodesk. The quick focus of this class is a look back at mechanical/technical drafting from the first year and includes Working Drawings, Welding Drawing, Threads and Fasteners, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and Introduction to Parametric 3-D modeling using Autodesk Inventor.

Drafting III (8532) - Advanced Architecture and Advanced Mechanical Drafting
For those students that are able to work Drafting III into their schedules, it will allow a student opportunity to focus on more in depth Architecture or more in depth Mechanical/Technical drafting. 3rd year students in the past have been able to draw house plans for local contractors and have also made several mechanical drawings for local fabrication companies. This is the perfect opportunity to hone specific skills to help toward future employment or further education.

Washington County Career & Technical Center Drafting vs. Virginia Highlands Community College - Dual Enrollment credits:

Students may earn Dual Enrollment credit at Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) for successfully completing WCC&TC's Drafting Courses:
*Drafting I (8530)........................DRF 111, 3 Credits
*Drafting II (8531).......................DRF 112, 3 Credits
(Students must be in the class for at least 1 full block period in order to dual enroll. At the present time, 9th grade students are not allowed to dual enroll, and 10th grade students must be approved by the instructor and the Principal.)

CEDENTIALING:

The Drafting class at the Washington County Career and Technical Center offers two different options for obtaining an Industry Recognized Credential. Passing the credentialing exams will also earn students Verified Credit toward graduation. Students in Drafting II may take the General Drafting NOCTI Certification Exam or the ADDA Certified Mechanical Drafter's Exam. Passing one or both exams will earn the credential and the verified Credit. Passing the ADDA exam will earn the student the status of Certified Drafter (CD) .

OSHA 10 Certification:

Students are also able to obtain OSHA 10 Certification via CareerSafeOnline.com. This online system provides students the proper training for the OSHA 10 hour course and can be accessed from any computer having internet connection.

SkillsUSA

Washington County Career and Technical Centers is a proud member and participant of SkillsUSA, the national organization of Trade and Industrial Education Students. SkillsUSA serves all 50 states and the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.
For the past 10+ years, WCC&TC has been a 100% membership school, meaning all students are members and are eligible to participate in competitions and SkillsUSA related events. SkillsUSA offers students many opportunities for competitions in their trade related areas as well as many "soft skill" related areas on local, district, state, national, and international levels. SkillsUSA also offers opportunities for scholarships for further education and contacts with leading industry sponsors.
