LONG RANGE
GOALS
A REPORT BY THE LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE
31 JULY 1997
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
AIA NEWARK AND SUBURBAN ARCHITECTS ENCOURAGES
AWARENESS OF THE PROFESSION THROUGH EDUCATION AND FELLOWSHIP.
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVE: This Committee
sought to identify Long Range Goals of the Newark & Suburban Section
of the AIA, as well as to offer possible methods for achieving those goals.
Committees or officers who might be responsible for achieving the goals
are suggested. Ultimately, the partiesí roles should be described in and
coordinated with the Operating and Policy Manual. In order to be effective,
this Report must be reviewed and updated every two (2) years.
GOAL #1: Help AIA Newark & Suburban
members improve and advance their architectural practices and careers.
· Organize, maintain current, and publicize a referral system,
in which potential clients could contact AIA N&S to promptly get a
list of qualified, interested architects (President-Elect and WWW)
· Continue the success of Continuing Education programs, and
ensure that membersí CEUís qualify for State of New Jersey required CEUís
(President & Vice President)
· Continue to offer informative, timely programs that deal with
important aspects of membersí professional careers (President & Vice
President), including: · Computers in practice · Design issues
· Marketing strategies · Business practice
· Improve our membership services on a local level, including
records and recognition of membersí career milestones (Membership)
· Protect architectsí interests and roles by making the State
Board of Architects aware of specific cases of non-architects offering
architectural services (Legislative/Government Affairs)
GOAL #2: Improve the image and community
status of the Architect, and increase the Publicís awareness and understanding
of the Architectís role.
· Organize and increase the effectiveness of our public outreach
programs. Develop programs to include:
· High school career days (Publicity)
· One-night course at adult schools, describing ìWhat an Architect
can do for youî (Publicity)
· Continue to develop and run previously successful outreach
programs such as Lego for kids and public presentation of local Architectsí
projects (Publicity)
· Improve the positive exposure of Architects in the local media,
including description of successful projects and awards received (Publicity)
· Reach out to local community leaders, possibly by inviting
them to a program that deals with concerns of home owners and building
owners (President)
· Set up a booth at a home or building show for Architects in
general and Newark & Suburban members specifically (Publicity)
· Send ìThe Rostrumî to area mayors, presidents of Chambers
of Commerce, and local and State legislators (Rostrum) · Provide
and maintain a supply of AIA-National material that deals with the ìwhys
and howsî of working with an Architect, and distribute to public as often
as possible (Membership)
· Continue to work with AIA-NJ to keep involved with our political
representatives. Keep legislators informed of our activities and issues
that are important to us (Legislative/Government Affairs) · Increase
and maintain current our presence on the World Wide Web (WWW)
GOAL #3: Increase AIA membership as
well as attendance at meetings and programs.
· Prepare an accessible and easy-to-use membership package for
distribution to possible new members (Membership)
· Develop an ìad campaignî for local, non-AIA architects; the
campaign would stress the importance and necessity of continuing education
credits and describe how AIA N&S programs and meetings provide credits
(Publicity/Continuing Education)
· Reach out to future architects by:
· Supporting the goals and objectives of the IDP Program (Intern/IDP)
· Continuing interaction with NJIT and other schools with architectural
curriculums (Programming/Continuing Education)
· Including them in the audience of the ad campaign described
above, to let students and interns realize the benefits and importance
of IDP and Continuing Education (Publicity/Continuing Education)
· Get one ìnameî speaker per year to highlight a program, and
possibly open the meeting up to the public and/or related professions (this
might also generate revenue) (Programming/Continuing Education)
GOAL #4: Maintain an efficient, strong,
and fiscally responsible administration and leadership for the organization.
· Continue to develop and update the Operating Policy Manual
(Bylaws/Policies)
· Keep Bylaws current (Bylaws/Policies)
· Encourage greater participation in leadership responsibilities
by the trustees and general membership (All Officers)
GOAL #5: Foster better relations between
the Design and Construction Industries.
· Establish contact with other organizations and associations
in the design and construction industries (Publicity) · Promote
joint programs with other organizations in the construction industry (Programming/Continuing
Education)
· Join forces with other organizations in support of legislation
that is beneficial to all in the construction industry (Legislative/Government
Affairs)
· Clearly define the different yet interdependent roles of architects
and constructors (President)
GOAL #6: Support environmental consciousness
and awareness of a sustainable built environment.
· Use recycled paper for ìThe Rostrumî (Rostrum)
· Use recycled paper for all N&S stationery and mailings
(Secretary)
· Promote the use of recyclable and recycled materials used
or specified by architects (Programming/Continuing Education)
· Encourage the preservation and adaptive reuse of our local
historic architectural heritage (Publicity)
