Elements of Literature Sixth Course
Elements of Writing (both are available in the classroom)
Necessary materials: Dell Laptop, 3 ring binder, notebook paper, dark blue or black pens, library card ( Highland Springs and Henrico County), dictionary, crayons or markers.
Grades: Each marking period will be averaged with total points earned and weighted credit. All homework, classwork, and quizzes will be weighted once; all tests and essays will be weighted twice. The final research paper will be comprised of six hundred points. Extra credit will be given only when the student has completed all of the assigned work during a marking period.
Essential Questions: The following questions are open-ended and will be the focus of study for the entire year: 1.How does the history of the English people shape our concept of government and ourselves as citizens? 2.What role does literature play in shaping our identity as men and women? 3.How does the vast variety of literature help us to become critical thinkers? 4.How does the study of English help us to develop our own identity and our skills to become an active participant in the 21st Century?
The following is a tentative description of what is to be covered during each semester: First Semester
Grammar and spelling review Proofreading Frequently misspelled and/or misused words Writing products: College essay SAT essay Personal narrative Journal, Expository writing Refinement of writing skills and style Self-evaluation and peer editing skills British Literature Topics: Anglo-Saxon culture and literature Medieval culture and literature Elizabethan culture and literature Genre Focus: Epic Drama Instructional texts Instructional manuals websites search engines Research: Review research process including MLA format
Second Semester Written Products: Cover letter Resume Thank-you notes Grammar and spelling as needed British Literature Topics: Elizabethan culture and literature 17th and 18th Century culture and literature Pre-Romantic culture and literature Romantic culture and literature Victorian culture and literature Genre Focus: Informational Drama Fiction Research Paper and Presentation
