Here is what is coming up next week in class:

Reading: We are taking a unit test this week in reading. Therefore, we will not have spelling words or a story of the week in reading. There is nothing your child needs to do to prepare for these tests except to get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast!

Monday- Scott Foresman Unit 1 Reading Comprehension Test
Tuesday- Quarter One Writing Prompt
Wednesday- Degrees of Reading Power (DRP)

Math: We’re going to continue our study of SOLs 4.5 and 4.6. We will focus on adding and subtracting whole numbers. We’ll also estimate sums and differences. Students will take a quiz on rounding sums and differences on Wednesday.

Social Studies: We’re continuing our study of Jamestown in Social Studies! These are the key points that we will cover:

VS.3 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the first permanent English settlement in America by
a) explaining the reasons for English colonization;
b) describing how geography influenced the decision to settle at Jamestown;
c) identifying the importance of the charters of the Virginia Company of London in establishing the Jamestown settlement;
d) identifying the importance of the Virginia Assembly (1619) as the first representative legislative body in English America;
e) identifying the importance of the arrival of Africans and women to the Jamestown settlement;
f) describing the hardships faced by settlers at Jamestown and the changes that took place to ensure survival;
g) describing the interactions between the English settlers and the Powhatan people, including the contributions of the Powhatans to the survival of the settlers.
Students will take a quiz about Jamestown on Friday.

Science: We’re studying weather in Science (SOL 4.6)! Please review your notes and your study guide. There will be a weather quiz on Thursday.
