Assignment: Gender and Non-verbal Behavior

(Adapted from Cheryl A. Rickabaugh Sex and Gender: Student Projects and Exercises. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1998.

Purpose:  To examine gender differences and similarities in nonverbal behavior.

Instructions: Observe 3 dyads: 2 women, 2 men, and 1 women/1 man interacting in a social setting, for example, in a park, in the student union, in the lounge of a dorm.  Situate yourself where you can clearly see both participants. Complete a data sheet on each dyad.

Situate yourself where you can see the faces of both participants in each dyad.  Using the data sheets that were given to you during the first class, analyze the nonverbal behavior in each interaction using the variables and operational definitions below.

Participants:  Describe the people you observe.  Record what you think might be their age (child, adolescent, young adult, middle age, elderly), record what you think their gender is, and what might be their ethnicity/race.  Also, record any other information that you think might affect their interaction (for example positions of authority, student and professor).  This might include the nature of their relationship, if you happen to know the participants, social status.

Setting Briefly describe the setting.  Comment on where you made your observations, the time of day, whether the participants are sitting or standing.  And any other factors that you think might be important.  Record the length of time you observe the dyad.

Touch:  Count the number of times each person in the dyad touches the other.  Record with hatch marks the number of times Person A touches Person B and the number of times Person B touches Person A.

Smiling: Record the amount of smiling by using the e two rating scales on the data sheet.  First, rate the amount of smiles exchanged during the interaction. The, summarize the pattern of smiles exchanges by the participants.

Eye contact : Record the amount of eye contact by using the rating scale on the data sheet.  Evaluate the proportion of time each individual spends gazing into each other’s eyes.
