The Scott R. Scanlan Center In 1993 Saint Viator High School received a generous donation from the Scanlan family to implement a program for students who have specific diagnosed learning challenges but who have the potential to succeed academically at Saint Viator. Thus the Scott R. Scanlan Center was born. Since its inception the Scanlan Center has helped hundreds of students experience academic success at Saint Viator. General Content of Instruction While the services offered by the Scanlan Center are many, there are two main classes that have been incorporated into the curriculum for Scanlan Center students, Learning Strategies I and II. Usually taken during freshman and sophomore year, respectively, these classes are designed to serve as the foundation of a support program for students diagnosed with various learning challenges. These courses strive to help these students meet with success in the regular curriculum through the teaching of various skills and strategies as well as assistance with content-area coursework. Learning Strategies courses meet for a regular class period each day. Each class period is divided into two sections. At the beginning of the period, students receive instruction in topics to promote school success and self-development. The following topics are taught, reinforced and applied to all appropriate learning situations: -Organizational skill - Time management -The brain and the learning process -Understanding learning challenges -Self-advocacy -Learning styles -Learning attitude -Listening -Note-taking from textbooks and lectures -Memory techniques -Test taking strategies -Stress management -Writing skills -Relating to teachers and peers -Problem solving -Critical thinking During the remainder of the class period, students are urged to actively work on material from their content area classes. Staff is available to answer questions, to reinforce concepts, re-teach material, help with editing written work, review for exams, etc. Learning Strategies Three This class is offered after the completion of Learning Strategies I and II as a resource period. During this time the strategies and skills previously taught will be reinforced and instructors will be available for consultation and assistance. Grades will be determined based on participation, organization and efficient use of time and resources.
