Josephus Who: Jewish historian- a Jew and later a member of the Roman Imperial court When: 93-94 CE – 60 years after Jesus What: wrote and mentioned Jesus Why: discusses disturbances that were caused by Jesus during the time of Pontius Pilate the procurator of Judea (26-36 CE) Understood Jesus as an historical persin who had a profound impact upon the people he encountered 2. Seutonius Who: Roman Historian- lawyer When: 120 CE What: Claudius expelled the Jews from Rome on account of the riots in which they were constantly indulging at the instigation of the Chrestus. 3. Tacitus Who: Roman Historian What: wrote about a fire which burned Rome in 64 CE “ They got their name from Christ” 4. Pliny Who: governor of a Roman Province in Asia Minor When: 110 What: wrote to Emperor Trajan for advice on what to do about Christians Mentions Jesus but gives no new information about him
