Chapter 3 Overview

1. Abraham:  Abram experienced a single loving God in an
   age when people believed in countlessess gods         
   Father of Faith – covenant-Patriarch
   Sarah
2. Isaac: Abraham’s son
      Rebekah

3. Jacob: Israel- 12 sons= 12 tribes of Israel
   Rachael

   The Hebrews in Egypt: famine-150 years peacefully 
   then slaves
   Jacob dies  1650

4. Joseph: one of Jacob’s sons- favorite- rose to power in
   Egypt

5. Liberation from Egypt: Passover (Event and Celebration)
                                             Exodus

6. Moses: delivered Israelites out of Egypt

7. The Sinai Covenant: covenant with entire people- system
   of Jewish Law-  cornorstone 10 Commandments
   “ I will be your God, you will be my people”

9.The Kingdom Of Israel

10.Saul: 1st King of Israel
                                                          
11. David: 1000 BCE   Jerusalem= City of David
         Pilitical Palace
         Religious- ark of the Covenant
         Greatest King

12. Solomon- Built Temple
                                                          
13. The Kingdom Divided: North wanted relief from taxes 
    and labor thus wouldn’t recognize
    Solomon’s son as king
              721 BCE Assyrian’s destroyed North

14.Babylonian Captivity: 598 BCE- leading citizens of 
   Judah were carried off as captives into 
   Babylon                 
   Diaspora – remnant                                     
   587- Temple Destroyed- Jerusalem

15. Isaiah: prophet of Judah
       “ South will be destroyed…stump remain…”

16. Jeremiah: prophet in Babylon – Exile

17. Return of the remnant: 539 BCE Persians overcame 
    Babylonians and allowed them to return to their
    native land -    rebuilt Temple- 515 completed

18. Beginning of Judaism: Jew- Judah     No longer a
    political nation under a king but rather a  religious 
    community under a new form of leader- High Priest
