October Trainer Activities to Complete
You are very special individuals to take on this task and to put your heart and soul into the work of being a Trainer. "If it's green, it's biology, If it stinks, it's chemistry, If it has numbers it's math, If it doesn't work, it's technology" - Author unknown. How true this statement can be sometimes, but, what a difference you can make! Thanks for all that you do.

Responses included ---- this month was filled mainly with getting computers up and running and finding sites for the k-1 teachers to use on the internet. primarygames.com was excellent! now, they want more! i'm collecting many of the sites from your bookmark which i used alot for my own teaching. ----- i assisted several teachers one on one with integration activities. and several with email concerns. ----- the social studies and science departments are using alot of powerpoint presations as teaching tools. they also are requiring studies to give presentations instead of writen reports. ----- i have worked with 3rd and 4th greade teachers and with the students on the different kinds of literature using printed materials and the internet. ----- i have decided to provide my classroom speech lessons in the computer lab this year. this allows me to teach the student the computer skills they need to have to survive in today's world as well as show the teachers ways to include technology into their lessons. this month i have focused on basic keyboarding skills. the pre-k and kindergarten classes are completing matching activities to learn where the letters are on the keyboard. the first and second grades are learning to pick font and font size. the third and fourth graders are learning how to change font, font size, appearance within a document they have typed. the third and fourth grade teachers are implementing these skills into their lessons in the classroom and during the time they bring students to the lab. right now they are using it with spelling words. also, since the students are becoming more proficient in computer use, the teachers are bringing them to the lab on their classroom time and having them use the computers more. ----- the technology integration project that i was involved in this month was with cms95 gradebook. the latest session i conducted was on august 30, 2002. the session included staff from across the curriculum (english, social studies, exceptional children, workforce development, rotc). i have worked with this last group on follow up questions/concerns as well as participants from the 2 sessions last school year in the same curriculum areas, as well as math, science, physical education. ----- staff development activity for the month - integrating the computer skills test into the class curriculum. teachers cannot help the students prepare for the test if they don’t know what is on it. the staff development was offered to everyone as all of the teachers at spms need to be integrating these skills into their classes, not just the 8th grade teachers, and they need to be using more than the internet. provided one on one help here and there (where do i find this) and a 45 minute personal session to a new teacher. ----- having all teachers work with the digital camera and turn in a project.
- Question #11 - What was a fun/exciting/motivating/made you feel good moment that you had this month as a Trainer?
Results include ----- working with a retired teacher who has come back to teach and is trying to utilize her computer. ----- being able to verbally tell someone how to fix their tech problem and have them follow my instructions and be able to fix it without me actually going to the computer. ----- i showed one lady how to remap her data location in ar when the path gets lost. she came to me a few days later and very happily told me that she was able to do it on her own. ----- helping teachers with learn new stuff! the excitement on their face when they realize it's not so hard. ----- i felt really good when the k-1 teachers became so excited about primarygames.com. i couldn't believe it! last year, when i tried to get them to explore the site, i had only one kindergarten teacher to look at the site. now, all of the teachers are saying, more, more!! ----- when the fifth grade science teacher came to me with his technology integrated unit all planned and wanted me to look at it just to make sure it would work. he was one of the most interested teachers last year, and i helped him create several things. now he's on his own - and has already had his classes in the lab for "integration" not the star reading/als/cornerstone software. one success story. although with our cms integrade pro gradebook, i really felt good when the time came for interim reports to be printed and go home with the kids. last year, we switched to the windows version, and, even though it is simpler than dos, it took several training sessions and many long days at report card and interim report times nursing some teachers through. i let them know i was available, but i did not have a single late day. they had a few questions, but worked on their own. ----- watching the students get excited about using the computers for "real work" not just games and ar made me feel good. it made me feel even better when they remembered what we went over a previous week and could explain it to each other using the proper vocabulary words (ex. icon instead of little picture) ----- i really enjoy helping teachers find that special site to integrate a lesson, or create a document to help with classroom management. this month i found a site in our reading series that we had all obviously overlooked. i found it earlier in the week and couldn't wait to share it at our grade level meeting. i had the site pulled up and ready to walk through in our grade level meeting. everyone really liked the supplemental materials that are available for our stories in our basal readers found on this site. the publishers are doing a great job also at integrating technology. ----- most of my teachers sent me a reply to my first workshop. that means they are checking their mail. ----- having teachers using the digital cameras taking pictures of their students and using them in various ways in their classrooms. the joy the teachers shared with me when they were successful doing these projects from the things they learned in training last year. ----- to see that some of my students who did not put forth much effort last year or were low performing are actually giving me a 100% effort this year and are performing well in the class, especially my 8th graders. read a sign at the dillon county vocational school that really motivated me. it read, "if you do not think every day is a good day, then try missing one". ----- career teachers, that participated in staff developments last year to earn credits toward their renewal, are still interested in technology integration this school year. they are updating their web pages, evaluating new links, and asking for help. they are utilizing their trainer resource and not allowing themselves to become frustrated. ----- my feel good moment was when an academic instructor told me that typing was hard work; and that she had stayed away from computers until she had no choice but to take a technology session. "learning this stuff is hard work" was her response to me. she, along with others, use to think that in our keyboarding classes we didn't do "nothing". i felt real good when she and others found out just a little bit of the "nothing" that we don't do. ----- when i finally got my yahoo trainer stuff all in order
- Question #12 - What made you feel crappy/lost/abused/frustrated this month?
Results included ----- not having enough time to devote to the teachers is crappy. i'm excited however, about our school having a second trainer this year. i feel this will really help us meet the needs of the school better. ----- teachers not having computers in classrooms! i have alot of stuff to share with teachers but no computers in classroom. ----- feel a bit overwhelmed about being trainer. school is already bugging me about the training i will do and i haven't even attended a trainer session yet. ----- all of the material from the meeting. but i understand that with these positions being paid now, there has to be a paper/electronic trail to check that each is doing his/her job. thanks tammy for all that you do! ----- when i didn't have enough computers for the children to work in pairs and had to assign 3 or 4 students to one computer. ----- felt frustrated when teachers would come at their convience and not my and then become upset with me. i guess i spoiled them in the past because i would usually answer a teacher's request before the day was out. it is not like that this year. ----- almost got there when some started complaining about the their lack of time/knowledge/etc. when they found out technology integration is a weekly requirement in their lesson plans - especially when they whine about mrs. stone not being available like she was last year - but we're taking care of that (see above in service plans). besides it is my job to keep them from feeling crappy/lost/abused/frustrated when it comes to technology, and i guess i feel crappy when i realioze i haven't done that. ----- dr. young’s unexpected retirement left me feeling a bit lost. he was a great supporter of the technology integration program, promoting and participating in staff developments sponsored by the trainer program. ----- trying to remember how to retrieve & replace a scroll bar on an internet web page and feeling rebuked by frustrated colleagues who were trying to register for the computer technology workshops. ----- that i have teachers that do not know how to check their e-mail etc. and they will not come to me for help. ----- not getting the emails, and of course, sending my social security number over the internet. how stupid was that!!!!!
