Because of allergies, no nuts or nut products are allowed. Living Rosary, Tuesday, October 7th, 8:40 a.m. *Science Test on Soil on Thursday, October 9th. *Grammar - Test on Sentences, Subjects and Predicates - Tuesday, September 30th *Social Studies - Test on Maps on Tuesday, October 7th. *Religion Test on Friday, October 10th. * Spelling and Reading tests - Every Friday *Book Report - Adventure - Book in a Box. Directions went home Thursday, October 2nd. Students should be reading an Adventure book and pass the AR test with an 80% or higher. What We Are Learning MATH - We are learning the properties of addition and the rules of subtraction. This vocabulary is important to know for when we continue on to multiplication and those properties and rules. We will be rounding and estimating and using mental math to add and subtract 2 or 3 digit numbers. Be sure to check out www.eduplace.com. There is a link below. Click eservices. Username and password are olphmath4a. READING - We are reading our first literature review, a book called Sarah, Plain and Tall. The students will complete a study guide questions for each chapter read in the book. We will finish the book next week and will then watch the Hallmark version of the Movie. We will compare and contrast Sarah at the beginning of the book and Sarah at the end. We will also compare the book to the movie. The students will then take their AR tests as well as a short quiz on the book. Reading tests are on Fridays. Students may bring home their books to reread the story as a way to study for the test. They may also bring home their Language Arts spiral notebook where they have written the definitions to their vocabulary. The tests are half vocabulary and half comprehension. RELIGION - We are learning about the creation and what creation reveals about God. We will also become Stewards of Creation. We are making creation books. SCIENCE - We are learning about what soil is made from and what its uses are. SOCIAL STUDIES - We will continue with geography by learning about maps. We will begin with the hemispheres and then learn about road, political and physical maps. We will learn how to use latitude and longitude to locate places on a map. We will learn about compass rose and how to use relative locations. We will also learn about using a map key to read maps. GRAMMAR - We are reviewing subjects and predicates. This week we will focus on simple subjects & predicates and compound subjects & predicates. We will also begin writing our first paragraph, a How-to. We will use the sequencing words we learned in reading to organize the writing. We will be working on the Ideas & Content Trait of the 6+1 Traits of Writing. SPELLING - Students have 12 words in the vocabulary workbook and sometimes 8 words from their reading vocabulary. They write these words in their agenda so they can bring them home to study. In addition to their spelling list, I will often give them fill-in-the-blank spelling sentences or ask for the antonyms or synonyms in their test to check for their understanding of the word.
