Lesson #1 Prereading Strategies for Reading Nonfiction
The K-W-L Chart
Let's practice this prereading strategy. We will use the Know-Want to Know-Learn Chart
(K-W-L Chart) to record ideas from your preview of text and information you learned from reading.
First, we will preview the text. You will read the title and the first few sentences to figure out the topic, and what the selection is about.
Next, use your prior knowledge. Think of what you already know about the topic.
Then, set purposes for reading. Think of questions you have about the topic that you want answered. You might learn the answers to these questions and other things as well. If you don't, you can look in another source for more information to complete your KWL Chart.
