College Prep Writing: O.T.E.* (students w. an average   of "A" or "A-" will complete the O.T.E. in order  to receive the grade)

The New Yorker  is a weekly magazine dedicated to ideas. It is timeless and immediate, energetic and thoughtful, serious and funny. The New Yorker  is about good writing, a point of view, and a deeper  understanding of the world. A 'typical' issue of The New Yorker contains an eclectic mixture of political and business coverage, social commentary, fiction, humor, art, poetry, and criticism
-The New Yorker  website

You will have the chance to become familiar with  The New Yorker magazine, as you search recent ( past 2 years) issues for your  O.T.E.*  You may select any nonfiction  piece. Since you must read fifteen (15) pages, be sure to look  for something that interests you - sports, celebrities, scientific investigations are especially good.

PROCESS

1. Read 1-2 articles whose pages total fifteen(15) pages (it maybe be one article, or perhaps,  1.5 or 2.5 or 3.5 articles).
2. For each article OR partial article, compose the following:

*A typed abstract (150-250 words).

* A typed essay (250-500 words) incorporating a response to these questions:

o What do you think the title means?

o How is the title of the article significant, i.e. how does  it help you to formulate some notion of  the author’s thesis? In your answer, be sure to quote 2-3 specific passages from the article, and include in-text citation (must  be MLA – consult Little, Brown or Agenda book) with page number .
