College Prep Writing: O.T.E.* (students w. an average of "A" or "A-" will complete the O.T.E. in order to receive the grade) The New Yorker is a weekly magazine dedicated to ideas. It is timeless and immediate, energetic and thoughtful, serious and funny. The New Yorker is about good writing, a point of view, and a deeper understanding of the world. A 'typical' issue of The New Yorker contains an eclectic mixture of political and business coverage, social commentary, fiction, humor, art, poetry, and criticism -The New Yorker website You will have the chance to become familiar with The New Yorker magazine, as you search recent ( past 2 years) issues for your O.T.E.* You may select any nonfiction piece. Since you must read fifteen (15) pages, be sure to look for something that interests you - sports, celebrities, scientific investigations are especially good. PROCESS 1. Read 1-2 articles whose pages total fifteen(15) pages (it maybe be one article, or perhaps, 1.5 or 2.5 or 3.5 articles). 2. For each article OR partial article, compose the following: *A typed abstract (150-250 words). * A typed essay (250-500 words) incorporating a response to these questions: o What do you think the title means? o How is the title of the article significant, i.e. how does it help you to formulate some notion of the author’s thesis? In your answer, be sure to quote 2-3 specific passages from the article, and include in-text citation (must be MLA – consult Little, Brown or Agenda book) with page number . O.T.E*. SCHEDULE o Friday, 14 December '01: Show me Xeroxed or printed article[s]. o Friday, 11 January'02: Turn in all three (3) parts: copy of New Yorker piece[s]; abstract; essay. While NO WORK turned in after Friday, 11 May, will be accepted for the O.T.E.*; nevertheless, this deadline is well in advance of the end of school, so if I determine that work needs to be revised, you'll have time to do it and still receive OTE credit.(i.e. an "A"/"A-") *Opportunity To Excel
