Prehistory Rocks! EXPLORATION OF LIFE IN THE UPPER PALEOLITHIC 30,000 to 10,000 YEARS AGO Introduction: Much has been written, filmed, and imagined about the latter part of the Old Stone Age in Europe. Early archeological evidence was often incomplete, methods of analysis were cumbersome and inaccurate, and the supporting technology for analysis, classification and evaluation did not exist. Hypotheses were often supported with minimal evidence and much speculation. Through the use of modern technology, the science of archeology has greatly changed over the last two decades, giving us a more realistic picture of the people referred to as Cro-Magnon. In order for you and your class to learn what life during that time was like, your groups will pursue an exploration of various aspects of Cro-Magnon life. Each group will collect data from various Internet sites, in order to draw conclusions and respond to your BIG QUESTION. Each group will be given an evaluation rubric for the activity before we begin. This rubric will be used for grading the final product. Prior Knowledge Section: To begin this activity we will read selected material about the geographic setting of the Paleolithic in Europe, 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, including information about landforms, climate and natural resources. This material will be kept in your binder. Class discussions will ensure that all of you have the same information The entire class will use atlases and complete maps in class to research the answers to the following questions together: ·In what geographic locations are Cro-Magnon sites found? (Migration, Human/ Environment Interaction) .How have the geographic features changed over 30,000 years? (Location, Place, Region) ·What was the climate of Europe like during the period of the Upper Paleolithic? How has it changed? (Place, Region) Directions: Using the Internet sites and the links indicated, collect data, analyze the information and answer the assigned BIG QUESTION for your group. NOTE: Follow the sites and links for your group by looking at the number in parentheses at the end of each selection. BIG QUESTIONS: 1.What do we know about the art of Cro-Magnon? Include sites/places found, subject matter, media used, and possible purpose. 2.What do we know about the technology Cro-Magnons developed and used? Include tools and weapons made and materials used. Include what animals were hunted with each weapon and what each tool was designed to do. 3.What do we know about the religion of Cro-Magnon? Include expression, beliefs, artifacts, and rites. 4.What do we know about the lifeways of Cro-Magnon? Include clothing, homes, food, family structure, roles, travel, etc. 5.What do we know about the animals and plants the Cro-Magnons used? Indicate what animals were eaten, used for clothing, etc. and what plants were eaten and which could be used for medicinal purposes, dye, fibers, etc. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH! Evaluation: After your team has visited the suggested sites related to the topic assigned, and collected data, you will have time to construct a poster, make a “fact sheet”, and prepare a spoken explanation which will inform and instruct the remainder of the class about the answers to your BIG QUESTION. This activity will be evaluated (graded) using the rubric given to you with the Prior Knowledge activity. Evaluation will be done in the following areas: ·Appropriate pictorial material which illustrates and supports your answers ·Appropriate written material that explains and supports your answer (It MUST be in your own words) ·Documentation of sources ·“Fact sheet”-A summary handout page (Mrs. Lorrey will need one page to duplicate for all the members of the class the day before your presentation) ·Oral presentation
