Great Websites for Families

The Internet is being used more and more by children of all ages. It allows children to gain access to vast amounts of information quickly and easily. No longer do students have to make trips to the library to do research or find current maps and pictures. Using the Internet effectively can help children with school projects, hobbies, and other interests.

How do we keep our children safe while they are traveling throughout this virtual world? The online community is really no more dangerous than the real world. Just as we talk to our children about dangers in our community, we must also teach them about online safety rules.

Basic Guidelines for Children:
  • Do not give out personal information to people you meet online
  • Do not ever agree to meet someone in person that you have met online.
  • Never respond to E-mail that is hostile, inappropriate, or makes you feel uncomfortable. Show the message to your parents.

Guidelines For Parents:
  • Learn as much as you can about the Internet
  • Talk to you children about the rules listed above. Add your own rules about length of time online, sharing with siblings, etc.
  • Monitor your children while they are online. With younger children, do online activities together.
  • Encourage your children to share their discoveries with you. Show an interest!
  • Consider Filters or Ratings.
  • Set a homepage that is appropriate for children
  • Bookmark great kids sites to make it easy for your children to find sites you know are acceptable.
