December 3-7

This week has brought milder weather but much rain.  While the rain is always welcome, I look forward to seeing the sun again!

Chemistry.  Students have been keeping a "water diary" detailing water use in their homes.  They are using this data to determine the amount of water used per person per day.  On Thursday and Friday we will have a test over water use, water quality, metric conversions and measurements.  Due to the wet road conditions, our regularly scheduled river test has been postponed until Tuesday, December 11.

Biology.  We are studying the chemistry of life.  Students will be completing supplemental worksheets covering atomic structure and bonding.  Students will use this knowledge to complete a series of lab activities covering the important biological compounds.

Science II.  Students are reading the current issue of Science World.  This issue has a very interesting article on anthrax.  Later in the week, students will construct a food chain and food web.

IPC.  Students completed a lab on the effects of acid rain.  Their "chalk carvings" were exposed to acid (vinegar) and the results noted.  Also students are learning to distinguish between different types of mixtures and how to tell the difference between a mixture and a compound.  Several worksheets will be given to reinforce concepts learned.

Environmental Science.  Students in this class are also reading the current issue of Science World and answering questions to check for understanding.  They will have a test over how ecosystems work on Thursday.  Our native garden is doing well.  The new additions to our garden are ornamental cabbages, pansies, red sage, Texas silver sage and Mexican heather. The grasshoppers and drought took their toll on the existing plants but many survived and are flourishing in this wet, mild weather.
