English II – Class Procedures and Expectations

Rules

You are expected to follow all rules set forth in the Student Code of Conduct. Additionally, you are expected to remain in your seat quietly during class, to refrain from distracting behavior, and to raise your hand during class discussions to allow all students a chance to participate. You must also follow the school guidelines for laptop usage.

Conduct

You will receive one verbal warning per class period each time a rule is not followed. For any following infraction, you will be assigned detention during breakfast break the following class day in my classroom. You must bring something to work on during detention. Failure to appear for detention will result in a disciplinary referral to the principal. During any six weeks period, after three breakfast break detentions, you will be assigned 30 minutes of detention after school. If you are assigned after-school detention two times in one six weeks period, your parent or guardian must attend a conference at the school in order for us to implement a behavior management plan.

Supplies

You will need a three-ring binder, notebook paper (NO spiral paper), blue or black ink pen (NO pencils), and five dividers for this class. You will be provided with a literature book to use at home for the school year. You may be provided with workbooks. If you lose a workbook, you will not be issued another one until you pay for the one that is lost.

Daily Activities

Classwork will always begin with an assignment from your Grammar and Language Workbook. When you report to the classroom, you must log on to the classroom page on your laptop (daily assignments will be on the chalkboard until laptops are issued) and begin work immediately. Daily work will vary according to the concept being covered. Always be prepared with your binder, paper, pen, laptop, and workbook. Work completed during class should be turned in to your class period tray on the table beside my desk. Daily scores make up 75% of your six weeks average.

Participation

You will earn a participation score each six weeks. You will start with 100 points at the beginning of each six weeks. If you come to class unprepared (no binder, pen, paper, laptop, etc.), five points will be deducted from your participation grade. If your laptop is being repaired, you must bring a repair ticket with that day’s date. You will not be allowed to plug in your laptop during class, so you must bring it to class fully charged. The participation grade will be included in your daily average.

Absences

If you miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to come to tutorials before school or during the breakfast break to receive your assignments. You must bring an excused absence slip from the office in order to make up missing work. Otherwise, any grades missed will be a 0.

School-Related Absences

Any time you must miss class for a school-related reason, it is your responsibility to inform me beforehand. You must get your work before the absence and turn it in the first class period after the absence. Tests must be made up during tutorials or the breakfast break.

Homework

Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. I will take up the work after the tardy bell rings. I do not accept late assignments.

Tests

You will have at least one major test each six weeks. Study guides and/or notes will be given for each major test. Test scores make up 25% of your six weeks average.

Reports

You will receive a progress report for the first half of each six weeks. This report must be signed by your parents or guardian. Students with a grade of 75 or below must report to tutorials at least twice a week until your grade is above 75.

Grade Sheets

You will be required to keep a record of each graded paper handed back to you. The first six weeks this will be done on paper and thereafter, you must keep the grade sheets on your laptop using a spreadsheet that I will provide.
