LINDA CARTER 817-949-5855 ROOM 210 E-MAIL: lcarter@cisdmail.com Elective Credit: .5-1 (2 SEMESTERS) CLASS OVERVIEW: This comprehensive laboratory course is designed to address a broad range of knowledge and skills related to personal development and management, promotion of strong families, and preparation for adult roles Second semester content includes budgeting, consumer-buying practices, nutrition and dietary practices, as well as food selection and preparation. Influences of societal and technological changes, career options, and the management of multiple family, community and wage earner roles are included in instruction. ***Please note that this one year class covers all of the areas taught in other Family and Consumer Science classes. One semester classes cover one specific area in detail. Since this an overview type class, materials may be somewhat reviewed or repeated in the semester classes. For example: the student will learn basic nutrients in Personal and Family Development but will learn detailed nutritional information if they choose to take Nutrition and Food Science class. TEXTBOOK: SKILLS FOR PERSONAL & FAMILY LIVING. There will be a classroom set of textbooks. Individual students will not need to check one out unless they want to have one at home during the year or if there is an extended illness and a textbook is needed for makeup work. (Books may be checked out from bookroom.) SECOND SEMESTER: Personal management Consumer decisions Healthy Living Nutrition and Foods Understanding food labels Nutrition Food safety and sanitation Food preparation equipment Food preparation terms and methods Basic food preparation CAREER CONNECTION Home meal preparation experience Housing Careers SUPPLIES: Second Semester: Each student is asked to bring one roll of paper towels and one pop-up container of disinfecting wipes (Clorox type). There is no fee for the cooking labs. Occasionally students may be asked to furnish additional supplies as “extras”. (For example, they may be asked bring a brownie mix or popcorn that they can prepare and enjoy after a test.) These “extras” will be voluntary only and will not be required but rather will be a supplemental activity for them to enhance their experiences. GRADES Daily grades will count 40% and will include daily assignments, class participation, quizzes, short-term projects and labs. Major grades will count 60% and will include tests, reports, and long-term projects. Assignments need to be turned in promptly. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up missed work. A CAREER CONNECTION project will be done each semester. This is a major project that will be weighted as 2 test grades. Details will be given in class. TUTORIALS: Daily before school.
