Course Description
Because World Geography is a high school class, successful completion of the class will earn your child a high school credit. A passing score on the World Geography S.O.L. test earns the student a verified credit for graduation! Students will take a comprehensive exam at the end of the course. However, students may be exempted from the exam if they have passed the SOL test, had good behavior, and 95% attendance rate. World Geography is not offered at Abingdon High School, therefore it is of the utmost importance that your child put forth his or her very best effort to ensure a successful year.
World Geography is taught on an extended time or "block" schedule, which means that if your child has World Geography in the fall, he or she will take the SOL test in December. Students scheduled for World Geography in the spring semester will test in May. GOOD ATTENDANCE IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL since each block class will cover approximately twice the subject matter covered in a regular (50-55) minute class.
Parents, if you are checking your child's progress in World Geography through the parent portal, please be aware that there may be a time lapse from the time the work is collected and the time that the grade is entered into the online gradebook. If your child has been absent, he or she may have a missing grade. If your child is delinquent in turning in an assignment, that grade may result in a zero. This does not mean that the work cannot be made up for a reduced grade. At the end of the nine weeks, grades may be adjusted to the benefit of the student based on effort and improvement.
Class Expectations
Students are expected to come to class with homework completed and prepared to work. Student should always have textbook, notebook, pencils, and colored pencils. We will follow the schoolwide C.A.R.E. policy.
