Find a photo of a person that you find to be particularly compelling.
In your notebook write the following while looking at your photo:
Write two descriptive details about the photo.
Write two sensory details about the photo.
Write two emotional details about the photo.
What do you think was happening before the photo was taken?
What do you think happened immediately after the photo was taken?
What do you think this person might say on a regular basis?
What is the first thing this person would do in the morning?
What is the last thing this person would do at night?
What makes him/her laugh?
What makes him/her sad?
Look deep into the eyes of the subject of the photo. Ask the person, "What do you want?" and write the answer in your notebook.
Using your notes, think of a poetry form that would best capture the message you want to write about the subject of your photo. Check the links at the bottom of this page for directions for some poetry forms you may wish to use--- or come up with one of your own.
Write a poem about the person in your photo. You may use some of the ideas in your notes. (You do NOT have to use all the ideas.)
