Pocahontas
was born in 1595. Her real name was Matoaka, but she never used that
name outside her tribe because the Native Americans thought that would
bring bad luck. Her nickname, which she used, was Pocahontas, and that
meant playful. Her father was called Powhatan. He was in charge of 25
tribes in the land that we call Virginia.

In
1607, settlers in the new Jamestown colony were having a hard time.
They were starving! Pocahontas' father had a man named John Smith as a
prisoner. Pocahontas begged her father to save his life and he did.
When he was brought back to his colony, Pocahontas knew how hungry the
colonists really were and brought them lots of food so they wouldn't go
hungry.

A
few years later, Pocahontas was a prisoner of the settlers. They
thought that if they kept her, her father would give them some things,
which they needed. They treated her well. She fell in love with John
Rolfe. They got married in 1614 and she changed her name to Rebecca.
