1ST QUARTER WORK
We began the year with a study of the Scientific Method, the SI System, and MATTER.
1st Quarter Assignments
WEEK 9
November 1: 2nd period will spend a few minutes reviewing then take the exam. 4th period will review for the exam, complete the write-up for the Phase Change Lab, and make up missing work/quizzes.
November 2: 1st period will spend a few minutes reviewing then take the exam. 3rd and 5th periods will review for the exam, complete the write-up for the Phase Change Lab, and make up missing work/quizzes.
November 3:Turn in 1st quarter science notebooks. 2nd period will complete the write-up for the Phase Change Lab and make up missing work/quizzes. 4th period will take the exam.
November 4:Turn in 1st quarter science notebooks. 1st period will complete the write-up for the Phase Change Lab and make up missing work/quizzes. 3rd and 5th periods will take the exam. We will also conduct a brief experiment on density using chocolate (if we have time).
WEEK 8
October 25 & 26: Vocabulary Quiz on Chapter 8 Sections 1 - 3. Unit 1 Test corrections. Homework: Chapter 8 Review page 242: Checking Concepts 1-3, 10 and Checking Understanding 11-14
October 26 & 27: Lab Exercise - Lighting Bunsen Burners. Unit 1 Test corrections. Homework: Complete worksheets on SI not finished in class.
October 28 & 31: Phase Change Lab Homework: Complete missing assignments, get your Science notebook together and STUDY! Chapter reviews: Chapter 1 Review Chapter 2 Review Chapter 8 Review
WEEK 7
October 17 & 18: A few more comments on Graphs followed by the Test on Chapters 1 & 2!
PLEASE STUDY all we have covered to date. The test will include questions on Lab Safety and Equipment Use, Scientific Investigation and Experimental Design (IV, DV, Constants, Controls, Repeated Trials), the SI system, and Graphing and Analyzing data. Your science notebook will be a big help in this.
If you have been slow to understand the importance of keeping a quality notebook up to date, Chapters 1 & 2 in the text will help you prepare for this test. Forgot your textbook? Need more help studying? Here are answers to select questions in the chapter reviews: Chapter 1 Review Chapter 2 Review
Homework:Read Chapter 8 Section 1 (beginning on page 214)and define the 5 vocabulary words.
October 19 & 20: Cover Chapter 8 Section 1 in class. Create "Four States of Matter" foldables and view video clips along with lesson.
Homework:Define vocabulary words for Chapter 8 sections 2 & 3.
October 21 & 24: Cover Chapter 8-2 and 8-3 in class. Homework: Memorize the vocabulary for sections 1-3 for quiz next class. Also, answer the following questions using complete sentences: Section 8.1 (page 220) questions 1-4, Section 8.2 (page 223) questions 1-2, and section 8.3 (page 227) questions 1-4. Be sure to restate the question in the answer.
WEEK 6 October 11: 1st, 3rd, and 5th periods had a special treat with a visitor leading a CRYOGENICS demonstration on Tuesday. Efforts are being made to schedule this excellent demonstration for 2nd and 4th periods in the near future.
Homework: Pages 56-57 Numbers 1-10 and 18-20: Copy and complete the sentences and Memorize the Chapter 2 Vocabulary for a quiz next class! The activities below may help you study. (And be sure to drink some chocolate milk!) Also, begin reviewing for the test on Chapters 1 & 2.
October 12: 2nd and 4th periods will work on representing and analyzing data using graphs. We will also review Experimental Design through a group activity and address expectations for lab write-ups in preparation for our next class.
Please remember: Let's stay focused on Science during class!
October 13 & 14: Chapter 2 Vocabulary QUIZ Formal assessments are a necessary part of education. Periods 1, 3, and 5 will spend a few minutes on representing and analyzing data using graphs and Experimental Design (time permitting). Also, this is a LAB DAY! We will be conducting an experiment measuring the volume of an irregular shaped object by using displacement and determining the density of the object. Homework:Graphing worksheet and study!
WEEKS 1-5
All my classes have had a good start to the year during September. We have already had the opportunity to conduct several laboratory experiments as we have put our learning into practice. Science is everywhere! It's neat! Students get to move around and do activities in science! Our labs and demos have included:identifying laboratory equipment and use,
making qualitative and quantitative assessments of physical and chemical changes of a birthday candle, evaluating the effect of temperature on the rate of dissolving, accurate measurement using graduated cylinders, a cryogenics demo (periods 1, 3, & 5), determining the density of an irregular shaped object using mass and volume, and investigating phase change. We will spend a lot of time this year learning through discovery in the laboratory setting. Please take a moment to view my calendar to see other topics we have covered in class to date.
