A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence.

Your math book is UNDERNEATH your coat.

The one BEHIND us honked the horn.

A preposition is always followed by at least one noun or pronoun. This noun or pronoun is called the object of the preposition. The preposition, its object, and the object's modifiers make up a prepositional phrase.

He poured sauce OVER THE PIZZA.
(over is the preposition and pizza is the object of the preposition)

The pile OF DRY LEAVES had grown larger.
(of is the preposition and leaves is the object of the preposition)
