UNIT 6 PROJECT OUTLINE- TRANSFORMING THE NATION- IMMIGRATION AND ELLIS ISLAND

OBJECTIVE:
(what you are doing and why):
* Use the World Wide Web to research United States Immigration at the turn of the Century (1900),
* Create a diary of a fictional immigrant,
* Create a collage of Ellis Island Immigrants,
* Draw a map of world immigration patterns at the turn of the century (1900).

PROCEDURE:
1.) EVERYONE MUST:
A.) Create a diary of a fictional immigrant who passed through Ellis Island at the turn of the century (1900). Be sure to research the sites for data of who came over and why, and what procedures the immigrants went through upon entering Ellis Island. Include all of your findings in your diary entries. Some sites contain actual audio clips of immigrants, try to locate a few! (Be sure to notate at the end of your essay at least 4 Web sites that I have supplied for you and 2 more of your own that you discovered.

2.) Secondly, EVERYONE MUST CHOOSE ONE of the following:
A.) Create a collage of various pictures of immigrants and their journey that you found on the WWW sites. Add captions to each picture that describe what we are seeing.
B.) Draw a map depicting world immigration patterns at the turn of the century, 1900. Show where most of the immigrants originated from and then where they settled when they reached America. Remember to include a key for any symbols used on your map.

ASSESSING YOUR WORK:
A.) Your essays will be graded using our Essay Rubric. Be sure to have an Introduction, a body with strong supporting details and relevant facts, and a solid summary as your conclusion. Use outside information, have a clear plan of organization, and no spelling errors. Maps will be graded using our Map Rubric. (Map Rubric = a key explaining symbols used, proper labels of geography, color, scale, title, easy to read, no spelling errors.)
