Nancy Turpen Social Studies 6th grade Team 1 2009-2010 GENERAL INFORMATION • Students need their Social Studies folder in class every day. • They do not need to bring their textbook to class as we have a class set. They can keep their book in their locker or at home. • Our text is The American Journey. We will concentrate on the material found in Chapters 18-30 throughout the year. We will also use a variety of other sources as well. • All assignments can be found on my homework page and at the top right hand corner of my right board in the room. (by the pirate) • Chapter assessments or projects are usually given every two-three weeks. Major test days for Social Studies are Wednesday and Thursday. All major tests are worth 100 points. • Assigned homework is given infrequently however students will always have a chapter to review and study. • If students have an excused absence they have 2 days for every day they were absent to make-up work., this includes tests. It is the student’s responsibility to get the make-up work from me and return it. The best way to accomplish this is to look on line at the web page and get assignments or for the student to ask me as soon as they return for all make-up work. • I will post current grades every week on line. Please keep in mind that project grades may be posted less frequently. • Technology skills will be integrated into the Social Studies curriculum this year. • Geography skills will be emphasized throughout the year. • We will use Jr. Scholastic to read and discuss current news stories. • My hope is that our class will collaborate on a project with another class in our state, country or in the world. OTHER INFO: • The best way to contact me is by email: • My email address is: turpenns@vestavia.k12.al.us • I usually return every email by the end of the day if not before. • 7th Period is my plan everyday and I am availabe on most days before or after school. Please call the office if you would like to make an appointment. • If necessary you can also reach me at 823-7119, my home number • Students can earn A-slips in many ways in my classroom. One way is to bring in materials, artifacts, or any other interesting information they may have about the topics we are studying.. This of course includes guest speakers! I will always reward acts of kindness and helpfulness to other students and teachers as well. • Healthy snacks and water drinks are welcome in my classroom.
