GROUP PROJECT:
Creating a Psychology Handbook
Part One:
Overall Quality (10 points)
·All parts of the handbook fit together; pages are all the same size and writing is the same style.
·A variety of visual images enhance the handbook. (Is there a theme?)
·Major topics are summarized in students' own words.
·Text is clear and simple.
·Handbook is written for someone who does not have prior knowledge of psychology.
·Handbook looks like a final, finished product.
Part Two:
Introduction (15 points)
Cover & names
·Cover is colorful and visual images capture the reader's attention.
·Title and authors' names are clearly visible.
Table of Contents
·Table of Contents provides a simple and complete overview to information found within the handbook.
·There is a clear pattern of organization within the handbook.
Definitions
·Any psychological terms that the average person may not know are defined.
·Definitions are easy to understand and written in students' own words.
Public Perception of Psychology
·Handbook includes a description of common misperceptions the general public may have about psychology based on media representations.
·Current trends or "bandwagons" popular in today's society (regarding psychology) are addressed.
Part Three:
Psychological Perspectives & Historical Figures (30 points)
Six Modern Approaches
·Handbook includes a brief description of each of the 6 psychological perspectives.
·Descriptions are written in students' own words and enhanced by use of visual images.
·Descriptions include basic beliefs of each approach as well as areas of investigation (areas that are studied by each approach).
·Each description includes reasons a person could use to justify/support that view. (Why does it make more sense than the other approaches?)
Biographies of two major figures in psychology
·Each biography is clearly written in students' own words.
·Each biography is more than a listing of dates and events. The summary describes events in the person's life that are important in understanding their role in the development of the field of psychology.
·Each biography includes discussion of the impact of major events at the time this person lived on his/her actions and beliefs. (Historical context: how did the time period affect the person?)
·Each biography states the psychological approach that fits that person.
**Examples of major figures in psychology include: Freud, Jung, Skinner, Erikson, Watson, Bandura, Pavlov, Maslow, Harlow, Rogers, Piaget... See me if you have questions!
Photos (pictures) with autobiographical captions
·A picture or drawing is included with each biography.
·Each picture includes a statement the person made (or may have made) reflecting on his/her greatest accomplishment in the field of psychology.
Part Four:
Careers & Resources (15 points)
Psychologist/psychiatrist
·Handbook includes a discussion about the differences between psychologists and psychiatrists.
Career options
·Handbook includes general job descriptions for possible careers within a variety of psychological fields.
·Handbook includes clippings from the want ads or internet job postings for current job openings.
Services in Shakopee area
·Handbook includes a list of services available in the Shakopee area.
·The list of services includes phone numbers and descriptions of services offered.
**A page ripped out of the phone book is not acceptable; however, the phone book is a good source of information. You may need to make some phone calls to determine what services are offered!
Part Five:
APA style Bibliography (10 points)
·All sources used to research the handbook are properly cited using APA style.
·These sources are listed alphabetically on one page.
**Use your Saber Style Handbook or follow the links below to access information on citing sources using APA style.
This is required. If you do not cite sources appropriately, the entire project will be returned to you without a grade.
