PROJECT GUIDELINES:
BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

Objectives:

* Analyze a current problem behavior.
* Create a workable plan to change a target behavior.
* Apply the principles of behavior modification by:
OPTION A: Creating an informational pamphlet about the plan or
OPTION B: Conducting an experiment and analyzing the results of the plan.
Scroll down below the dotted line for complete directions...

Part One:
Analysis of Current Behavior (10 points)
· Preparatory Worksheet is completed as directed (#1-6).
· Worksheet is attached to project and includes name & hour.
· Target behavior is clearly identified, defined, and observed.
· Records of target behavior are thorough.
A link to the Preparatory Worksheet can be found below...

Part Two:
Application of Behavior Modification Techniques & Analysis of Results (20 points)
· Plan provides a clear example of behavior modification.
· Operant conditioning techniques are clearly and appropriately applied through plan.
· All required elements for OPTION A or OPTION B are thoroughly addressed.
· Work is in own words, is neat, and is without spelling or grammar errors.
· Any sources beyond own experience and textbook are clearly cited using APA style.

PROJECT DIRECTIONS:

STEP ONE--GETTING STARTED

* Create a step-by-step plan to change the target behavior  (think "baby steps").
* Decide how to apply reinforcers to a more appropriate behavior while extinguishing the inappropriate behavior(s).
* Decide how to identify success.  (How will you know when the behavior has changed?)

Remember that simply numbering suggestions does not make them steps.  You must clearly identify each individual step that takes a person closer and closer to the final, desired outcome.  How can you gradually change this behavior??

STEP TWO--CHOOSE YOUR OPTION!!

OPTION A DIRECTIONS (PRODUCT = advertisement in pamphlet form)

* Turn your plan into a pamphlet that others could use to change a similar behavior.
Clearly identify the behavior to be modified!!!
* Apply appropriate psychological terms about learning theory.  (Example: schedules of reinforcement.)
* Make sure your pamphlet clearly identifies the specific steps that must be taken in order to change this behavior.
* Make sure you have clearly indicated possible reinforcers.
* Make your work neat, colorful, and attractive.

OPTION B DIRECTIONS (PRODUCT = chart & written analysis)

* Execute your plan for at least 4 days.
(You may attempt to change your own behavior or that of a friend or family member.)
* Create and use a specific method for gathering and recording data (a chart works well).
* Turn in your data (i.e. your chart) with your analysis.
* Considerations for Analysis:
Þ Describe the results of your project.  Did it work?  Why or why not?
Þ Did you follow the procedures you laid out?
Þ Did you use immediate reinforcement?  What schedules of reinforcement did you follow?
Þ Were you consistent in following the behavior with reinforcement?
Þ Did you choose appropriate reinforcers?
Þ Which elements of your plan seemed most and least important to your success?
