<p><b><u>Rat Care</u></b></p>
This site is all about the care of rats. Many people think that rats are disgusting, dirty creatures, but they are not. Many scintists believe that rats are as inteligent as a dog or cat. I think this is true. Play some RAT GAMES at the bottom of this page.
MyRats
Rats are best kept in pairs, this means they have constant company. I have two rats, Nero and Augusta. They are both females. When they were young, I kept putting them on my shoulder. Now, because of this they always sit on my shoulder when I get them out. I also used to get my rats out very often when they were young. This maent that they thought I was the only safe place. This maent that whenever I put them on someone else, they ran straight back to me. They have both stopped only sitting on me and are nearly cured of sitting on my shoulder.
General Care
Rats need to be cleaned out regularly. I clean out my rats overy other week. I use sawdust in their cage,but whatever you do don't use pine wood shavings.The pleasant smells harm the rats. When you clean out your rats cage, remove all the old materials (sawdust,bedding) and replace them with fresh materials. Rats don't smell bad unless their cage is not clean.
Like humans, rats are omnivorous. This means they eat most things. Never feed rats artichoke or brussel sprouts. They are poisonous to rats. Rats should be kept on abalanced diet. Mixes like Ronny Rat are fine, but suppliment them with fresh foods.
Taming
Rats never bite unless they feel severely threatned or they can smell fook on your hands. I have never been bitten by a rat. They have nibbled my finger gently when I have put it in the cage to let them know in there. Rats are easy to tame. When they are young, get them out frequently and they will soon become tame. My rats were tame after about 2 days. Reward your rats for behaving well. My rats are very well behaved and will not go to the toilet on me unless they are out for an exceedingly long time (well over an hour),a vast inprovment on previous types of pet!
Rats should be taken out for about 30 mins a night. This is because they are so intelligent and they need mental stimulation. This seems like a long time to keep a pet out for but the time will fly
