"The five themes of geography are the five things geographers look at when studying an area of the world. They help us organize all of the information about the world." DAY TWO ESSENTIAL QUESTION- What is the difference between the two types of location? "THEME #1- Location-location tells us "where" something is. This is the most basic question in geography. There are to types of location: a. relative-general / vague-this type of location usually uses the cardinal and intercardinal directions b. absolute-specific, exact-this type of location usually uses latitude and longitude" AFTER you have written this down, scroll down to the first activity under quia activities. DAY THREE- Essential Question-What are the cardinal and intercardinal directions? Write these down in your notes. "Relative location uses cardinal and intercardinal directions to tell us where something is in relation to each other. "I live north of the equator", "I live west of the prime meridian. The cardinal directions are north,south, east and west. The intercardinal directions are northwest,northeast,southwest and southeast." AFTER you have written these down in your notes- Play the hemisphere games found below. AFTER you understand cardinal and intercardinal directions, take the cardinal and intercardinal mini quiz. DAY FOUR Essential Question- How do we use latitude and longitude? Theme #1-Location-where? (continued) write these notes(anything in quotes) down on a piece of paper and keep that paper in your geography notebook. "THEME #1- Location absolute location- exact , precise a. latitude and longitude latitude lines run west to east across the globe measure distance from the EQUATOR (the most important line in latitude) measured 1-90 degrees away from the equator longitude lines run north to south along globe measure distance from the PRIME MERIDIAN (the most important line in longitude) measure 1-180 degrees away from the prime meridian" AFTER you have written the notes down,play the latitude and longitude game to review. Once you "win a million", take the latitude and longitude mini quiz. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY FIVE Essential Question- What are the two types of place? write these notes(anything in quotes) down on a piece of paper and keep that paper in your geography notebook. "THEME #2-Place-what is it like there? (CULTURE) two types Human-man made (roads, theaters , stadiums, etc.) Natural- made by the earth (rivers, streams, oceans, etc.)" AFTER you have written down these notes, play BOTH games reviewing place with the columns game. After you feel you have an understading of the types of place, take the Place mini-quiz. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY SIX Essential Question- What is the main way humans affect the environment? What is the main way the environment afects humans? Write these notes(anything in quotes) down on a piece of paper and keep that paper in your geography notebook. "THEME #3- Human and Environment Interaction- how do humans and the environment affect each other? two categories Main way humans affect the environment- pollution Main way environment affects humans-climate / weather" After you have copied the notes, play the interaction scavenger hunt game. AFTER you get them all correct, take the interaction mini-quiz. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY SEVEN Essential question- How do you measure movement? write these notes(anything in quotes) down on a piece of paper and keep that paper in your geography notebook. "THEME #4- Movement- how do goods, people and ideas move? This theme mainly looks at the transportation system of an area. How do ideas move? This examines how information is moved, be it radio, tv, newpaper, the internet." The skill you will need to be able to measure movement using the scale of a map and a ruler. After you have writtne that in your notebook, go to this website (or look under useful links)-http://geography.about.com/od/understandmaps/ht/htscale1.htm Read the article carefully about how to use scale and measure movement. After you are done, play the movement pop up game. Use the atlas near your computer to assist you. Once you are confident you understand how to measure movement, take the movement mini-quiz. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY EIGHT Essential question- How do ideas move? Write these down in your notes- THEME #4- Movement This theme also looks at how an idea can move. This really examines the information technology of an area. TVs, radios. phones, internet, etc. AFTER you have written the notes down, complete the movement essay found below. You have to write an essay on which invention that moves ideas is the most one. DAY NINE Essentail question-What is a region? Write these down in your notes. THEME #5- Region-grouping of similar places, based on the previous four themes. The two most important are location and human place. Most countries / states are grouped according to location first, then human place. AFTER you have written down the notes, play the Region columns game. Once you understand regions, take the regions mini-quiz. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY TEN Today is a makeup day. If you were absent, make up any work you might have missed. If you need to improve your mini-quiz scores, do so today. Don't forget, you must get at least 70% on EACH mini-quiz to be able to use your notes on the unit quiz. DAY ELEVEN Today is review day. Play the Jeopardy game found below. You may play by yourself or with a friend. You may play the rags to riches game and / or the hangman to help you prepare for the unit quiz tomorrow. Or, you may use today to try to achieve the necessary 70% on any of the mini quizzes. DAY TWELVE Today you will take the Five Themes unit quiz. IF you achieved a 70% on all mini quizzes, you may use your notes on the unit quiz. If you did not, you may not use your notes. Everyone is permitted to use the atlas near your computer. You may not re-take the quiz. One try per student.
