Course Description
We will cover numerous topics, such as decimals, fractions, probability, and geometry.
Class Expectations
Come to class prepared to learn and have fun! Have all necessary materials (pencil, paper, book, agenda, etc.) and assignments as well as a positive attitude. All students are expected to be respectful to the teacher and other students in the class.
Objectives
All students will be required to use their agendas daily. Please refer to the agenda for daily assignments. SOL objectives are listed at the beginning of each lesson in the student's Math book. SEE MOODLE LINK BELOW FOR UPCOMING EVENTS AND/OR HOMEWORK. You do not need a password to access your assignments. After clicking on the moodle link below, click "login as a guest."
Grading Scale
A = 93 and above
B = 85-92
C = 77-84
D = 70-76
F = below 70
Math Units
Material will not be presented in the same order as it is given in the text book. The order of the material that will be taught is based on the strands in Virginia's Standards of Learning. These strands, or units, are described below. The chapters from the book that correspond to them are also listed. (We will not necessarily cover every lesson in each chapter.)
First Nine Weeks
* Measurement - The skills taught in this unit include finding measurement, volume, and mass, and learning conversions for estimation and comparisons between the metric and customary systems. Chapter 12
* Number and Number Sense - The skills taught in this unit include comparing and ordering whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, using estimation, consumer applications, adding and subtracting decimals, finding the equivalent relationships between fractions, decimals, and percents, finding ratios, prime and composite numbers, even and odd numbers, common multiples, common factors, least common multiples, greatest common factors, and pictures and math symbols. Chapters 1, 3, 10, and 5
Second Nine Weeks
* Computation and Estimation - The skills taught in this unit include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers, division of decimals, estimation for multi-step expressions with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, multi-step consumer applications with fractions, decimals, and percents. Chapters 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7
Third Nine Weeks
* Probability and Statistics - The skills taught in this unit include collecting and analyzing data, interpreting line, bar, and circle graphs, interpreting stem-and-leaf and box-and-whisker plots, finding the mean, median, mode, and range, identifying measures of central tendency, observing a sample space, and finding the probability of events. Chapters 2 and 11
* Patterns, Functions, and Algebra - The skills taught in this lesson include comparing and ordering integers, finding geometric patterns, using powers of ten and scientific notation, arithmetic sequences, and exponents, identifying perfect squares and square roots, modeling algebraic equations and one-step linear equations, and understanding the following terms: variable, coefficient, term, equation, and expression. Chapters 1, 7, 8, 9, and 14
Fourth Nine Weeks
* Geometry - The skills taught in this lesson include finding perimeter, area, and circumference, choosing whether to use perimeter or area, deriving pi, estimating angle measures using reference angles, measuring and drawing right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles and triangles, classifying and identifying plane figures, congruent angles, segments, and polygons, and recognizing solid figures. Chapters 1, 4, 12, 13, and 14
