Revision Checklist for Creative Writing
Composing
Did you leave out any words without meaning to? Do your sentences make good sense?
(Read your paper aloud to someone. This will help you HEAR what you have written.)
Is your paper well ORGANIZED? Do you have a clear beginning, middle, and end? Does your introduction grab the reader and pull them into your writing?
What about your UNITY? Did you stick to the topic?
Is there anything you could leave out? (Everything sentence should be important to the message you are trying to get across to your readers. If it is not important to the piece, if it is stating the obvious, or if it is just repeating something you have already said--- leave it out.)
Have you elaborated on your topic by using DETAILS?
Written Expression
Have you used effective vocabulary choices? (Look up words if you are not sure.)
Have you used strong verbs > rather than weak verbs propped up by adverbs and adjectives?
Have you used specific nouns?
Have you used figures of speech to mesmerize your readers? (similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia)
Have you used sensory details to help your readers see, hear, taste, smell, touch?
Mechanics/Usage/Sentence Structure
Have you checked your paper for correct capitalization?
Have you checked for correct use of punctuation?
Did you circle at least five words per page on your rough draft and look them up for correct spelling?
Did you check your paper for use of confusing words to be sure you are using them correctly? (Ex: their, there, they're)
