Hola, y ¡Bienvenido a este sitio de la clase de español 3B!

Here you'll be able to remind yourself about what we're doing in class, and you'll also be able to practice and study the words, phrases, and structures we are trying to acquire in class.  I hope you find this  a helpful resource!

5 septiembre:  turn in HW (list over verbs you remember by memory) in the red box on front table;  get resource packet, list of 50 verbs, and course expectations packet.  Quiz (English to Spanish) on the 50 verbs to come on WEDNESDAY.  Word(s) of the day = hazaña (feat) and tiza (chalk).  HW = complete pages 3 and 4 of the course expectations packet.

6 septiembre:  get official seats, word of the day = contra; discuss Syria issue a bit, add one important question to p. 4 and turn in; take Spanish 3B pretest.  HW= study the 50 verbs for Wednesday's big quiz.

10 septiembre:  phrase of the day: "Hacer lo que quieres es libertad; que te guste lo que haces es felicidad."  share good news.  Review conditional tense and LEARN THE FUTURE TENSE!  Take notes on p.117 vocabulary and turn in the sentence you wrote last night.  HW = 1) study all 50 verbs for tomorrow's 50 verb quiz.  2) complete p.116, and 3) watch the presidential speech tonight at 9 pm.

11 septiembre:  word of the day: perdona (forgive).  Discuss presidential speech of last night, reading Spanish headlines related to that; share good news.  Take our 50 verb quiz.

12 septiembre:  word of the day:  acostado (lying down).  Correct p.116, using future tense; share good news, read practice story using p.117 vocab; share our personal phrases turned in on Tuesday.  NO VOCAB QUIZ TODAY... we'll have a quiz on FRIDAY over #s 1-13 on p.117.  HW = STUDY vocab and COMPLETE pp.117-118.

13 septiembre:  rosa = rose;  correct p.117, work on names, take vocab quiz on 1-13 of p.117 (worth 18 points).  HW = DO p.121 completely, practicing the future tense.

14 septiembre:  pulgadas=inches, share good news, work on names, correct p.121 using future tenses, listen again to "Vivir mi vida" by Marc Anthony and start to translate.  HW= finish translating the lyrics to English, carefully read the story on p.119, drawing an illustration of once scene from that story.  Also, work on pp. 109-110 (due Wed.)

This week we'll keep working on solidifying last week's vocabulary, and working on our pronunciation as well! We'll have a vocab quiz mid week featuring the last part of the p.117 list.

17 septiembre:  word of the day= equilibrio (balance), share good news in Spanish, do translations using FUTURE TENSE IRREGULARS, share homework (translation of "Vivi mi vida" and sing.  HW= STUDY p.121, complete top of p.122, and make sure 109-110 are done.

18 septiembre:  word of the day= deslave, discuss the landslides in Mexico, share good news, read aloud the p.119 story to work on pronunciation, take pop quiz on the future tense.  HW = remember the irregular present indicative yo verbs.

19 septiembre:  word = naufragó=shipwrecked.  Discuss the Costa Concordia event more, share good news, finish the p.119 story and watch most of Extra episode 11.  HW = plan on reviewing the future tense and studying p.117 vocabulary some more for a Friday quiz.

20 septiembre:  share good news, look at new proposed train in Japan, finish watching Extra episode 11, and play the name game. Today's quiz on Future tense verbs and the last few vocab terms from p.117 will be on MONDAY.
HW= pick two less familiar verbs from the "caigo, conozco, digo, doy" song and write a creative, fun sentence that uses them.

23 septiembre.  word= silvestre (wild, not domesticated).  share weekend news, take future tense and names quiz, turn in the sentence written for today.  HW = no written homework.

24 septiembre.  "No te preocupes = don't worry!"  review how to make positive and negative familiar commands together with slide, then see that the negative commands are actually just verbs in the present subjunctive!  Use p.139-40 to practice this.  HW = start w/ #4 on p.139 and complete pp139-40. 

Note:  test coming on Friday, over p.117 vocabulary, future tense, the song "vivir mi vida," and the basics of forming the present subjunctive.

25 septiembre.  "¿Qué pasa, calabaza?" =What's happening, pumpkin?  Share good news, discuss the subjunctive MORE and practice forming verbs in that tense.  Sing "Vivir mi vida" with percussion.  play "Simón dice" with profe using plural commands (which happen to be subjunctive verbs!).  NO WRITTEN HOMEWORK for Thursday, but PRACTICE FORMING THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE.  There are 2 activities below this text window that will give you great practice. 

Test Friday-- study p. 117, future tense (p.121), the meaning of the song "Vivir mi vida," and p.139 on forming the subjunctive.

26 septiembre.  "llevar a cabo" = to carry out, accomlish.  More examples of subjuntivo, share good things, correct p.139-140, practice verb conjugation with a game of "Escalera."  TEST TOMORROW... use conjuguemos.com to practice the future tense, and use the links below to help you as well.  You can do it! 

27 septiembre:  TEST 1

30 septiembre:  word of the day - salto base (base jump), share good news, get test back and make corrections; re-submit to profe (will get back on Tuesday).  RETAKES ARE AVAILABLE if you would care to try! HW= p.125 -- read the story and illustrate it in 8 pictures, using no more than 3 words of caption (in Spanish) per drawing. 

1 octubre:  word of the day = "cuentapropista" (self-employed person in Cuba), share good news, get tests back to keep with reminder of retake option; look today at the USAGE of the SUBJUNTIVO as a class.

Basically, it's used in the SECOND (dependent) clause of a compound sentence when the primary clause has to do with DESIRES, FEELINGS, or DOUBTS.

HW = complete p.125 and 141

2 octubre:  word=aprobar un presupuestao (approve a budget), share good news, continue learning about our interview project (due Nov. 11) and the subjunctive mood.  HW = PRACTICE forming subjunctive (present) on www.conjuguemos.com and study p.125 vocab!

3 octubre:  word of the day = la vida cotidiana = everyday life.  Share good news and a chiste, learn the totally irregular present tense subjunctive verbs (dé, esté, vaya, sepa, sea, haya), review what we know about subjunctive mood, and head to lab 204 to learn and practice some more.  HW = COMPLETE p.145, and read the p.125 story FIRST IN SPANISH and THEN IN ENGLISH to someone, who must then sign your page.  SIGNATURE = 20 points.

4 octubre:  word of the day = "botar" - to take out, kick out, bounce, etc.  share good news, credit for HW given, read p.125 story together, discuss coming conversation exercise on Monday, keep working on subjunctive with a great reading on what women want at various ages.  HW = keep studying subjunctive and p.125 vocabulary.

7 octubre:  word of the day = elaboración = production.  Share weekend happenings in Spanish, get the new subjunctive packet, start the hallway conversations, round 1... worth 25 points.  3 minutes total, 1.5 min of conversation with me, then 1.5 minutes of you describing what you see in a picture, all in Spanish.   HW = STUDY p.1 of the subjunctive packet, and on p.2 write in the missing verbs, and TRANSLATE THE 12 SENTENCES TO ENGLISH as well.

8 octubre:  word of the day = medio lleno, medio vacío (1/2 full, 1/2 empty).  Review subjunctive with p.2 of packet, resume 3 minute hallway chats, watch Extra episode 12, second to last episode!).  HW = keep studying p.125 vocab and do pp.133-134 (Raimundo story).

9 octubre:  word of the day = sobre la espalda (on his back), share good news, review subjunctive with p.1 of packet and with two awesome Spanish grammar songs, take pop quiz on the use of the subjunctive (10 points).  HW = keep studying the p.125 vocabulary for Friday quiz.

11 octubre:  share good news, share our student stories y'all wrote yesterday, take vocab quiz on p.125.  HW= THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN COOK AND BRING to class next Friday for our food day!

14 octubre: word of the day= certamen (competition), share good news, review ser/estar a bit with p. 122, do p. 129 and 130 for HW, start to look at this week's new vocab on p. 143... quiz on Wednesday over 1 - 10

15 octubre:  word of the day = palta/aguacate (avocado), share good news, correct p. 129, take notes on p.143vocab, and check out usage of ser with the video "Guapo."  HW = Study for p. 143# 1-10 vocab quiz.

16 octubre 2013 -- words of the day = yate de lujo (luxury yacht) and tifón (Typhoon).  Share good news, review vocab with new handout, take vocab quiz on # 1-10 of p.143.  Get new song sheet with the lyrics for "Yo te esperaré."  HW = translate the chorus and the first verse of the song, and keep studying your vocabulary!  Quiz over second half of list will be TUESDAY.

Remember... food day on Friday to celebrate Hispanic culture!   Helping with the party in some way is worth participation points... cooking something Hispanic that you bring in and share with us can be worth up to 15 extra credit points!

17 octubre 2013 -- word of the day = camuflaje (camouflage) -- share good news, go over chorus and first verse of "Yo te esperaré," listen also to the song by Juanes (A Dios le pido), catching all the present subjunctive in what he is asking God for in those verses.  Also, watch the video called "Los Quehaceres" by Señor Wooly. 

18 octubre - no word of the day, celebramos las culturas hispanas con comida :)

21 octubre -- palabra del día - bufanda y gorro (scarf and cap), jerséis (sweaters/jerseys), chocolate calentito (hot cocoa), manta (blanket), calcetines gordotes (thick socks).  Share good news from the weekend, learn how to use the HELPING VERB HABER in the present subjunctive.   For example, "Yo estoy muy feliz que todos hayan venido a mi fiesta."  Watch Extra episode 12 again.  HW = do p.146 and study the second 1/2 of the vocab list on p.143.

22 octubre -- frase del día = el pez más grande jamás pescado (the biggest fish ever caught), share good news, correct p. 146, finish episode 12 and do a partner activity using a 25 line summary of the show that Profe G wrote.  Take vocab quiz #8.  HW = finish the 25 sentence verb search and keep studying.

23 octubre -- frase del día = "densa nube de esmog" = dense cloud of smog.  Go over the subjunctive 25 sentences from Extra, and look at 10 Twitter tweets about feelings that also feature subjunctive.  HW = study for TEST!!!  ESTUDIA p.125, p.139, 141, 143, 145, y 146 + coro de “Yo te esperaré”

24 octubre - test!

25 octubre -- Extra episodio final

28 octubre -- tests not quite ready yet... watch entirety of Extra's final episode.  Turn in our Pink Word of the day packets.  HW = make flaschards for any vocab on p. 185 that you do not yet know.  All of these phrases are potential triggers that let you know some subjunctive will be coming up!

29 octubre - share good news, get tests back (retakes will be available for one week), begin to watch a documentary mostly in Spanish set in Bolivia called "The Devil's Miner."  Tarea = sigue estudiando y practicando el vocabulario en p. 184.

30 octubre - share good news, continue watching "The Devil's Miner."  HW= Find out why Lampedusa has been in the news in October of this year.  Keep studying the subjunctive triggers on p.184.

31 octubre - share good news, discuss the Lampedusa immigration tragedies in the Mediterranean, watch the rest of "Devil's Miner" and discuss.    Turn in your 5 completed sentences using the subjunctive.  HW = study p.184, especially #1-9 and the EVENS of 14-38 for our Friday quiz.

1 noviembre - get new pink sheets ... word of the day = permanecer (to stay/remain)  share good news in Spanish, take quiz on the p.184 triggers  for 18 points.  HW for Monday --> keep working on your interview project, which is due on Nov. 11

4 noviembre - word of the day = efigie (effigy or likeness)  Look at the coming weeks' schedule and buckle down to learn even more about the subjuntivo.  HW today = p. 201, 199, and 200.   

Note-- we will have our final test of the year on Nov. 14, and we will begin our Interview project presentations on Nov. 15 rather than Nov. 11.

5 noviembre:  word of the day = "acosar" (to stalk), share good news, credit for completing pp.199-201, correct those pages.  HW = do p.186 #15-end, circling the subjunctive verb and translating the sentence to English.

6 noviembre:  word of the day = "octava maravilla" (eighth wonder) credit for HW, correct it, then head to computer lab to practice the subjuntivo even more :)  QUIZ Thursday over the ODDS on p.184

7 noviembre:  practice the vocab on p. 184, take the quiz over the odds and grade it, share good news, look at how we use the subjunctive in adjective clauses as when we are talking about the features of a house that we would like to fine (busco una casa que tenga tres baños y cinco dormitorios) and with the word "aunque."  HW = study p. 157 vocabulary and read the story of Alfredo on pp. 157-8

8 noviembre:  share good news, practice the vocab some as a class, phrase of the day "a prueba de balas" (bullet-proof), take vocab quiz, watch the dramatic video "La confesión de Víctor."  HW = make sure you're ready to go with your interview presentation on Friday (one week!)

11 noviembre:  share good news, get lots o papers back, do 5 translations on our pink "para empezar" sheets practicing subjuntivo more, reminder of the week's schedule (test coming Thursday).  TODAY -- review what we know about familiar commands, both positive and negative, including when to add accents and when to add pronouns to the end of the commands.  Learn how to make FORMAL commands... For Tuesday -- translate the commands from pp. 171-172 into English, and then do pp. 162 and 163.  (pp. 164-67 due on Wednesday).

12 noviembre -- share good news, do translations w/ subjunctive, review commands a bit and head to the computer lab to practice with conjuguemos.com.  HW = complete pp. 162-67 for Wednesday.

13 noviembre -- correct all that, copy a lovely short poem by Octavio Paz, practice commands for tomorrow's test.  What to study?  p. 157 vocab, the story about Alfredo and Fluffy, subjunctive use, and how to do familiar and formal commands.
