Quarter Project Requirements First Quarter – 2003/2004 English 9 – 100 Points Correspondence Center This project is intended to teach you the difference between friendly and business letter formats. In addition, it will give you writing practice in the form of several different writing prompts. Guidelines * Select 3 of the letter options below * Follow the directions in the prompt * At least one of your letters must be business format and at least one must be friendly format * Avoid spelling and grammatical errors * Use correct letter format and original material * Projects may be typed or hand-written. * Turn in all 3 letters together by October 21st * You must complete all 3 letters to receive credit Letter Options * Write a letter of invitation for a specific event. Include specific information about the event, such as the occasion, time, place, and any other details guests might need to know. * Write a letter of complaint to a business that has disappointed you. Specifically list what dissatisfied you about the product or service offered by that company. Also explain what you expect the company to do to remedy the situation. * Write a letter from the point of view of a pet. What would the dog say to its owner? Use friendly letter format. This can be a letter of thanks, or a letter of complaint. * Write a thank you letter to someone who has done something nice for you lately. Use friendly letter format. * Write a letter from one inanimate object to another. For example, what would the floor say to the carpet? What would the lawn say to the mower? Use friendly letter format. * Write a thank you letter to a potential employer from a prospective employee. This should be a follow up to an interview. Thank the interviewer for their time and express your interest in the position opening. Use business letter format. * Write to a local, state, or national elected official explaining your position on a public issue. Include support for your argument and request a response. * Write a letter of application answering a help-wanted advertisement in your local newspaper. List your qualifications and experience. Use business letter format. * Write a letter to your parent(s) requesting a privilege that you feel you have earned. Explain your request completely and offer support for your argument. * A friend that you haven't talked to recently has just lost a relative. Write a letter of condolence expressing your sympathy and support. * Write a letter to a business or company requesting free supplies for our classroom or school. Pick a company or organization that is likely to donate, and be realistic in your request. Use business letter format. * Write a letter to the younger you. What would wise, teenage you say to you at age six? Be specific about what you like and give details on your positive experience with the company. * Write a letter from a historical figure to a present day counterpart. For example, what would The Beetles say to N-Sync? What would Marilyn Monroe say to J-Lo? Try to make the letter as detailed and realistic as possible. * Write a letter from one character to another. The characters can be from television, books, or movies. For example, what would Austin Powers say to James Bond? * Write a letter to yourself at age 50. What will the teenage you say to the middle-aged you? Offer advice, ask questions, and recall memories. Use friendly letter format and your imagination!
