Notes: Spanish Exploration The first Americans came from Asia on a land bridge between Asia and Alaska over the Bering Strait that was uncovered because of the Ice Age. They migrated southward across the continents of N. and S. America. Leif Eriksson had found America over 400 years before and established a Viking colony, Vinland in present day Canada. It had been forgotten over time during the dark ages in Europe when the Black Death killed almost a third of the population. The demand for spices and goods from Asia spurred the rise of exploration to find a water route there. Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal-built libraries and an academy to improve sailing and exploration-Portugal financed Vasco de Gama who sailed around Africa to Asia. Christopher Columbus-learned about the possibility of a shorter westward route to Asia in Portugal's libraries-sailed for Spain when Portugal turned his expedition down. Thought he had found India (Indians were named for this). Francisco Pizarro-conquered the Aztecs led by Moctezuma Hernan Cortes-conquered the Incas. Those two were the most powerful groups of Indians in the Americas and were enslaved by the Spanish. Ferdinand Magellan-first sailed around the globe (circumnavigated it) Ponce de Leon-claimed Florida for Spain, looked for fountain of youth Amerigo Vespucci- who sailed along the coast of South America-decided it was not Asia as Columbus thought. A German mapmaker named the country after him: America. Vasco de Balboa-discovered Pacific Ocean Hernando de Soto-discoverd the Mississippi River-explored the southeast Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico-de Vaca explored the Gulf coast and was shipwrecked at Galveston. He and his slave, Estevanico were taken by different Indian tribes and later escaped. He wrote a book that inspired others to explore America. Estevan led an expedition to the Southwest. Told the story of Cibola (cities of gold). Francisco Coronado-Led expedition through the Southwest (and Oklahoma)looking for the Seven Cities of Gold. El Camino Real- the Royal Road- a network of roads running for hundreds of miles from Mexico City to Sante Fe and later California. Ran along the Red River of Oklahoma. The things the Spanish wanted were gold and to convert the natives to Catholicism-the three G's Gold, God, and Glory were what they were after. The Spanish enslaved the native Indians. When the diseases they brought decimated the number of slaves, they bought them from Africa and started the slave trade to America. European Explorers and famous people Johannes Gutenburg-invented the printing press. People could buy book and learn about the New World. Spurred exploration. Martin Luther-led the Protestant Reformation. People wanted to flee religious persecution by settling in the New World. Jacques Cartier-claimed parts of Canada for France, promoted fur trade John Cabot-claimed parts of Canada for England-these two guys are why Canada is bilingual today (French and English) Henry Hudson-claimed New York (originally New Amsterdam) and the surrounding area for the Dutch. Discovered the Hudson River. The Dutch bought Manhattan Island from the Indians for about $24. It is worth over a billion times that now-most expensive real estate in America. The Dutch wanted cash materials, furs, etc. to make money in the new world. Sir Walter Raleigh-was a privateer for Queen Elizabeth attacking the Spanish ships carrying gold from the New World. Helped provoke Spain's attack on England with the Spanish Armada. After the defeat of Spain, made attempt to start a colony in Virginia. The colony disappeared, and no trace was ever found. (The Lost Colony) Robert de La Salle-claimed the Mississippi River for France-started fur trade up and down river. Joliet and Marquette-and explorer and a priest who sailed the Mississippi and also claimed it for France. The French and Dutch were mainly interested in the fur trade and making money in America and Canada. The English were there to colonize it and also used it to get religious freedom and to get rid of criminals. Spanish-3 G's. The French had the first European settlement in Oklahoma on the Arkansas River. It was a trading post founded by Pierre Chouteau. Slaves There were fewer than 100,000 slaves in America before 1600. By1700, there were over a million. By 1810, there were 6 million. Indentured servants were used early in the history of the colonies, but the increased demand for tobacco, sugar cane, and other crops meant more and more laborers were needed on the huge farms called plantations. Slaves filled this need. There were fewer farms in the North, so they had fewer slaves. That is why the South had most of the slave population. AUGUST 25-29 Bring back signed syllabus!!
