Four-Step Problem Solving: Most word problems are easier to solve if you follow these suggestions. Read the problem carefully and concentrate on what it is asking. You may find that you have to read the problem two or three times or more.
S.T.A.R. APPROACH TO SOLVING PROBLEMS
Search the problem. Retell the problem; read it twice; take notes; study the charts or diagrams; look up words and symbols that are new.
Turn the problem into a plan. Decide what operation(s) to use and what sequence of steps to use to solve the problem.
Answer the problem. Follow the plan and work accurately. If the first attempt doesn’t work, try another plan.
Review and check the problem. Does the answer make sense? Always double check!
