Rule of Three
The rule of three is a simple format for creating essays. The concept is as follows: The thesis and three main supporting ideas of the thesis are stated in the Introduction paragraph. The three main supporting ideas are then explained in the following Body paragraphs (each paragraph dedicated towards one supporting idea). Finally, the Conclusion paragraph is a restatement of the Introduction, wrapping everything up.
Here's a visual example:
- Introduction Paragraph
- Thesis Statement: A statement of what the entire essay is about.
- 1st point: A sentence that states what the first body paragraph is about, making sure to support the thesis statement.
- 2nd point: A sentence that states what the second body paragraph is about, making sure to support the thesis statement.
- 3rd point: A sentence that states what the third body paragraph is about, making sure to support the thesis statement.
- 1st Body Paragraph
- Topic Sentence: A statement about what the paragraph is about (just like the 1st point in the Intro Paragraph)
- 1st Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 2nd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 3rd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- Conclusion: A restatement of the topic sentence
- 2nd Body Paragraph
- Topic Sentence: A statement about what the paragraph is about (just like the 2nd point in the Intro Paragraph)
- 1st Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 2nd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 3rd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- Conclusion: A restatement of the topic sentence
- 3rd Body Paragraph
- Topic Sentence: A statement about what the paragraph is about (just like the 3rd point in the Intro Paragraph)
- 1st Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 2nd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- 3rd Example: A sentence supporting the topic sentence
- Conclusion: A restatement of the topic sentence
- Conclusion Paragraph
- Thesis Statement: A restatement of the Thesis sentence from the Intro Paragraph
- 1st point: A restatement of the 1st point from the Intro Paragraph
- 2nd point: A restatement of the 2nd point from the Intro Paragraph
- 3rd point: A restatement of the 3rd point from the Intro Paragraph
- Conclusion: A statement wrapping up what the entire essay is about.
The sentences in different colors are supposed to be similar in content. Remember, no examples (or concrete detail) are to be stated in the Intro and Conclusion paragraphs OR in the first and last sentences of each body paragraph.
