Rocks and Minerals Rocks and minerals can be found in nature. Rocks are made up of many minerals. Both are formed when magma cools. There are three types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools and they form outside of the volcano. Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments are pressed together; these form near water. Metamorphic rocks are formed when igneous rocks are put under pressure and heat change. Minerals are organic, occur naturally, have a unique chemical composition, and a crystaline structure. When it comes to minerals the slower magma cools the larger the crystals will be and the faster the magma cools the smaller the crystals will be.
