DAY 1
Choose one of the following statements and write a thoughtful essay supporting your view being sure to incorporate several novels or stories you have read as concrete detail.
1. Dreams are outlets for expressing wishes, desires, and the deep longings of the human soul. American authors incorporated dreams in the lives of their main characters- wistful expectations for the future, nostalgic longings for the past, escapist fantasies about the present- to emphasize their theme of how the individual fits into his world, the need of the individual to re-evaluate what is important to happiness, and the necessity of differentiating, then reconciling, fantasy and reality.
2. Modern writers addressed the disillusionment with the American Dream, the idea that to be an American entitled a person to a life of bliss, and illustrated the impossibility of the common man attaining happiness through accumulation of wealth.
3. Frequently, works of literature make statements about important issues facing the society of their time. Choose an essay, play, novel, or short story of literary merit, and write an essay in which you identify an important societal issue. Discuss the techniques used by the author to convey his or her beliefs about this issue.
