School Newspaper Projects

Computer/Technology SOL:

C/T8.1 The student will communicate through application software.

* Use advanced publishing software, graphics programs, and scanners to produce page layouts.

1. Go over the parts of the front page of our school newspaper.

2. Create definition cards for terms as they are discussed in class.

3. Play the Java Games on "Creating our School Newspaper," which are shown in the links at the bottom of this page.

4. Begin working on the following Newspaper Scavenger Hunt. Newspaper Scavenger Hunt
Click on the Newspaper Scavenger Hunt hyperlink. A "File Download" dialog box will appear. Choose open, and it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. You can type in your answers or copy and paste them. It will probably take more than one class period to finish this. Just get done as much as you can and save it into your folder.

5. Use the Print Artist 2003 graphics software to learn to create special headings and captions. Go over the program's toolbars and other special features. You may use the color laserjet to print assignments out.

6. Given a project handout created with Print Artist 2003, try to recreate it exactly as it is shown on the handout. Print out for a grade.

7. Compose an exact replica of the front page from the last edition of our newspaper. Print out and turn in for a grade.

8. Compose an exact replica of any other two-page layout of the last edition of our school newspaper. Print out for a grade.

9. Your teacher will give you a "beat" to cover for the next school newspaper. You are to create the layout for this section of our next newspaper. Use appropriate clip art, text boxes, photographs, and captions as needed. Your grade will be based on your creativity. Newspaper Layout Score Sheet Make the reader want to read your section. Use the rules of desktop publishing as you have already learned.

10. Create an announcement, which could be used for the morning and afternoon announcements over the intercom, about the sale of our next newspaper. Type it using Microsoft Word. Be prepared to present them yourself if yours is selected. Be creative. Try to create something that will draw attention to the sale of our newspaper.

11. Create a sign using Print Artist 2003 about the sale of the next newspaper. Since we don't know the exact date we will be selling yet, use something like Coming Soon......Cost is 50 cents. You may print these out on the color laserjet.

After each nine weeks, students will add pictures to their movie using the Movie Maker software. At the end of the year, students will add music to their movie and burn them to a cd to take home with them.
