During the last block of instruction time each day, all first grade classes focus on the science and social studies SOLs. We alternate each week focusing on a social studies SOL one week and then a science SOL the next.
You will also see a lot of writing that focuses on the science or social studies topic we are covering. We do a lot of journal writing about our topics, as well as work that we edit and publish.
Over the year, we will focus on the following topics:
Conducting investigations by observing physical properties, using simple tools, classifying objects, making predictions, and completing simple experiments
Investigating and understanding that moving objects exhibit different kinds of motion
Investigating and understanding how different common materials interact with water
Investigating and understanding that plants have life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics
Investigating and understanding the basic relationship between the sun and the Earth
Investigating and understanding the relationship of seasonal change and weather to the activities and life processes of plants and animals
