CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS
Never again in our lifetime will the Red Planet look so spectacular! This month the Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Science Olympiad Information

We have been meeting for about a month with our Science Olympiad students.
A Science Olympiad team has 15 members and we are still a little short of that goal , but we don’t want to go over because only 15 can participate at the competition. The Science Olympiad regional competition will be the last Saturday in February or the first Saturday in March, we do not know for sure yet. We may be having a practice event here at Cooper in December or January and we will need your help. As a matter of fact we could use your help with some of the events if you could arrange your schedule to meet with us occasionally. Right now we are meeting on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 but we are considering having some meetings in the evenings or Saturday mornings if that would be more convenient for you. You are welcome to come in to see what’s going on and if you are interested we will give you an event to work on with some students.
It costs us $125 to register for the science Olympiad competition. We are asking for a donation from each parent of $5.00. If you could give a little more that would be great. We are always in need of materials for training and construction.
