Life of the Adolescent Through the Decades

Begin your search by using the books that have been set aside for your project.

If you need additionl information on your topic, below is a listing of databases that will be helpful.  There is also information listed below that will help you cite your sources using MLA.


SIRS Decades
This resource features information on each decade from the 1900s to the 1990s.
Clickin on a decade, located at the top of the screen will allow you to receive a general overview of the decade and it will also provide some links to certian topics within the decade on the left hand side.

You can also search for a specific topic within a decade by going to the SIRS homepage.  Enter a keyword and limit the date to a specific decade.

       Example:
             Keyword: education
             Limit date by Decade (choose a decade)

Gale Virtual Reference Library - Decades

Click on the link to Gale Virtual Reference Library
Click on the subject History in the left hand column
In the Search within History box type in your decade
Example: 1950s
or click on a book cover then choose a volume and subject.

Do you want to access photographs?

Britannica Image Database
The Password will be listed on the board
Type in your decade - i.e. 1930s and a keyword i.e. movies, or fashion, etc.
Example - 1930s cars
Click on the link to the image you want.
Click on download.
Click on Open.
The jpg image will go into a temporary folder.
Click once on the jpg image and on the left side click on Move to.
Navigate to your U drive and choose it.
Right click on your image and rename it so that you will recognize it.

NOTE The MLA Citation for the photograph is given to you on the right hand column. Please copy the citation and use it in your credits!!!


Check AP Images for news photographs taken during your decade. There is not decade search strategy for AP Images so you will need to know the name of the event or person you are searching.


Citing Your Sources

SIRS Decades
This database does not automatically generate a citation. Use this template to cite your information:

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name (if given). “Title of Article.” Original Source Where Article Was Printed Date of Print Article (day month year): Page Numbers of Print Article. Name of Database. Web. Date of Access (day month year).

Citing an Internet Site
Author or Editor’s Last Name, Author or Editor’s First Name (if given).”Title of Page or Article.” Title of Site. Name of Institution or Organization Associated With Site, Date of electronic publication or of the latest update (day month year). Web. Date of access (day month year).

Citing a Book
You will need the information from the title page of the book and the back of the title page (verso). Click on the MLA Style Sheet below and find the template for citing a book. Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Andrews will be happy to help you with any questions.
