This lesson introduces you to several topics that will take basic Web design to the next level. Web design is becoming more involved than just using HTL or XHTML coding. Interactivity, database support, and e-commerce are common in many Web sites today. An understanding of these technologies is essential for anyone wanting a career in Web design. Remember as you go through this lesson that this is an introduction to technology, and you will be learning more about each of teh technologies mentioned in more detail in future classes. Consider the following as you work through this lesson and prepare to discuss in class:
1) What is meant by server-side and client-side technologies?
2) What are some advanages and disadvantages ofserver-side and client-side technologies?
3) What languages do you need to be proficient in to use server-side and client-side technologies?
4) What is a Web based database? Is it hard to have a database on your Web site?
5) How do incorporate cascading style sheets in your Web site?
6) What is the purpose of the Document Object Model (DOM)? What are the advantages or disadvantages to the DOM?
7) What is needed to be considered when it is time for you to publish your Web site? What are dvantages and disadvantages to hosting your site yourself?

What sites can you think of use advanced technologies discussed in this lesson? Find examples of sites that implement some advanced technologies and be prepared to discuss whether they add or take away from the overall message or appearance of the Web site.
You have been hired to design and publish a Web site for a company. you have completed the design and are now ready to publish the site on the Internet. You must decide if you are going to host the site for the company or if you are going to contract with an ISP or an ASP. Prepare to discuss which option you decide on and give supporting information for your dicision. If you are going to host the site, what will you need, hardware, software and bandwidth, and what will it cost? If you are going to contract with a provider, what will you need to find out from them before you begin? Give examples of providers that will be able to host the site. Is there a local provider that will meet your requirements? How much will it cost?
