One of the areas you will need to become proficeint in as you become a Web designer is E-commerce. Today more and more industries are striving to get their products online. It is estimated that 8.8 billion dollars was spent by online shoppers during the 2004 Chrismas season. E-Commerce is not limited to online shoppers only, but also involves business dealing with other businesses. E-Commerce is going to play a vital role for Web developers for years to come. Consider the following as you work through this lesson and prepare to discuss in class:
1) Have you ever purchased anything online? Why or why not?
2) Is it important, from a Web developers point of view, working with a customer on an E-Commerce site to understand supply chain management? Why or Why not?
3) Explain the importance of knowing how processing transactions occur and what that means to you as a designer/developer?
4) Why is it important to take into consideration international and cultural issues when devoloping an E-Commerce site?
Information Technology: Your Turn
Use the material in this lesson and the Internet to research the following.
Research E-Commerce trends. How is the Internet being used for E-Commerce? Is E-Commerce growing or staying about the same? What area is E-Commerce the biggest? Who is using E-Commerce? Supply number and references to support your findings.
Research online payment methods and how you can sell products online. Are there options readily available for you to implement if you are trying to market a product online? What types of solutions are available and at what cost?
You are in charge of developing an E-Commerce site to sell a product for your customer. Prepare a report describing the product and how you will market and sell the item online. In your report you should include how your E-Commerce site will handle the sales transactions and the tools you will implement for the transactions. Your solution will depend on the size of the company you are representing. Will your solution be in-house or out-sourced? Explain.
